Question about Dishwashers

Open Question

My wife has a kenmore quietgaurd standard dishwasher, model number 587.16149400. Our issue is that its getting so hot during its drying cycle that is melting plastic dishes. I checked and everything is dishwasher safe so it shouldnt be melting. It is even melting really thick items like water bottle lids and brand new plastic cups. it is also not rinsing well. What could be causing this?

Heat that is retained in the dishes is largely responsible for drying in this dishwasher. Since plastics do not retain heat very well, they will not dry as well as glasses, ceramics or metal dishes. Rinse aid must be used so that the final rinse water will sheen off of the dishes to accommodate this drying process. The heater element at the bottom of the tub is used to add heat during the drying cycle to aid in this process as well. This model of dishwasher does not have any forced air circulation system. Here are some tips that may help you resolve your drying problem:

  • Make sure that you are using rinse aid. Failure to properly use rinse aid can prevent proper drying. Adjust the amount that is dispensed if necessary. Also, check to make sure that rinse aid level decreases over time indicating that it is being dispensed properly.
  • The NORMAL WASH and POT & PANS cycles heat the final rinse water up to 140 degrees F. Use these cycles to help the drying process.
  • Do not choose the air dry option. This option cuts off the heater element during the drying process. NOTE: The heater element is not turned on during the first 6 minutes of the drying portion of the cycle.
  • Do not overload the dishwasher. Load the dishes to allow for proper water drainage.
This dishwasher has a heater fault detection circuit. If the heater is not working, the control will detect the lack of increase in water temperature. The dishwasher will stop and the CLEAN light will blink seven times repeatedly. The dishwasher would not be able to be used until the problem is corrected and the control is reset.

SOURCE: Kenmore dishwasher does not wash completely

I had the same problem. I switched to a gel dishwashing liquid and added about 1/2 cup of white vinegar to each wash cycle. (Just pour the vinegar in a cup, put it in the dishwasher and let the water fill the cup and disperse the vinegar.) Gradually you can reduce the amount of vinegar that you use. Worked for me, hope it does the same for you.

Kenmore dishwasher does not dry

The first thing you should do is to turn off yourdishwasher. After that take your Kenmore 16762 Dishwasher manual and make sure ifheating element (calrod heater) is still functioning (it could be broken or burnt). In that case your dishwasher will not keep water hot during washing cycle). If you need manual you can download a copy here!

The water isn't getting hot

If the water to your kitchen tap is above 120 to around 145 your machine is getting hot water. If not your need to adjust your hot water heater.
It is fine to open the DW door during the wash cycle. The unit will hold the wash cycle. Open the door during the start of the wash cycle (not rinse) and see it the dispenser door is open. If not it could be the timer is not sending the proper signal to the dispenser on when to open. This would be a timer issue and you would want to replace the timer. I doubt that this is it but it is possible.
Hope this helps.

The dishes come out with white film on them. During the washing cycle water is not hot, it's only luke warm. I thought it was the heater but the drying cycle works well. Is it all connected to one heater?...

Are you having any issues with your water heater at all. Make sure to run the water at the kitchen sink on the hot side first ti ensure hot water is getting to your dishwasher. Also make sure that the jet dry dispenser has jet dry in it. Hope this helps.

Kenmore Model 665.15891791 Dishwasher

Tim, start with the vent itself. Sometimes these vents get clogged with gunk and will not let the hot air escape. After that you will have to do some testing. Your model should have a safety thermostat that opens if the temp inside the dishwasher gets too hot cutting power to the heater. If your dishwasher has a heated dry selection you want to make sure that pad is working. You would have to select air dry, and see if the heater is getting power with a meter during the drying period. If so, you probably have a welded relay on the board. Catriver...post back.

Strong smell during sensing cycle

Visually inspect the heating element to make sure there is nothing on it, like plastic residue or something like that. You might also want to clean the dishwasher with vinegar, CLR, or Dishwasher Magic ( http://www.appliancepartspros.com/accessories.aspx?part_id=2675393&cat=62&rdr=%2faccessories.aspx%3fcat%3d62 ) Hope this helps, APP Tech http://www.AppliancePartsPros.com
