Question about Acer Aspire 3600, 5030, 5500 Keyboard KB.A3502.002

My husband spilled coffee on wireless keyboard and some keys work and some don't. I read on the internet that you can put in dishwasher to clean and then air dry. Is this true? If not where can I purchase a new keyboard?

While rinsing the keyboard with warm water is possible I wouldn't put it in the dishwasher.
The problem with water and electrical devices ( and yes your keyboard is electronic) is that is that it shorts out components if the power is applied when it got wet.
Remove any batteries before rinsing under warm water. Stand on end and allow to dry for a couple of days.
If you're lucky it's just the sugar making teh keys sticky and not work.
If not you'll need to buy a new one. Any wireless keyboard should work and they can be purchased in computer stores as well as office supply stores ( Office Depot, Staples)

Nope, not locked.Just damaged keys. The liquid must've leaked into the keys and is either preventing contact or shot the electronics.

Four keys in Belkin wireless keyboard are not working

If only specific keys are not working, something is obstructing those keys\' pickups which are located immediately beneath the keys. This is almost always caused by food debris or liquid spillage as dust doesn\'t provide particles big enough to cause issues.

If those four keys feel "funny" when being pressed, it\'s almost certainly a physical obstruction. If they feel "sticky" it\'s always a liquid spill. If you don\'t recall spilling anything over the keyboard, use a can of compressed air (found at office supply stores).

Turn the keyboard long side up, with the keys leaning slightly downward. Place the air nozzle close to the intersections of the keyboard, starting at one side and work your way to the other side, using short bursts of air. Repeat for every row of keys. Pay special attention to the four that do not currently work.

You\'ll probably see lots of junk fall out of the keyboard. That\'s good, if so--I would then retest the keyboard (no need to reboot the computer). That should fix it--if not, you may have to resort to pulling off the keys that don\'t work. The next possibility would be broken key hinges, but that\'s beyond the scope of this reply.

For liquids, cleaning is hit or miss. If left long enough, liquids will eat away at the circuits, or provide a short circuit and kill the component. Since only four keys are affected, I\'m really leaning towards food debris, but if you did spill a liquid, you can disassemble the keyboard and clean up any residue under and around the keys. Probably best to use rubbing alcohol and a q-tip for that--but if you\'re not comfortable taking stuff like this apart, it might be time for a new keyboard, or find a handy friend. Good luck!

Best solution now is to find a replacement keyboard. They are very easy to replace. Also, could use an external keyboard. Not ideal but it works.

As for cleaning, if the coffee had sugar and cream there is not much you can do.

There is one option I hesitate to suggest. Take the keyboard off, run it under warm water and let it dry for a few days before putting it back. May or may not work.

Keypad seizing..when ever i want to type, some of the keypad hang and i need to hit the letters several times.

It seems that keyboard has started to malfunction.. it happens after some time.. If possible replace the keyboard.. Get a new one from the marke.

In the mean time you can try cleaning the keyboard once, so that if dust on any other dirt is affecting the performance, you can overcome that..

Use a blower to clean that..

My daughter spilled juice on some of the keys and they are now sticking. Can this be cleaned? She did not say anything so this is 24 hours ago.

Hi Debra!

I have run into this problem a few times (coffee is necessary for those late nights and the sugar and cream dont seem to interact well with they keyboard, whodathought?)

I know this might sound absurd at first, but I have followed some advice I read on a couple sites a number of years ago. In fact, I even found one of the same articles that gave me the courage to put my keyboard in the dishwasher to clean it. I know it sounds scary, but really, there are no mechanical parts that would be hurt in the process. It is a lot of plastic and personally, I have done it dozens of times without a problem. Check out what Scott says over at BoingBoing:

"I can report that not only will the keyboard come out clean, but it will probably work once it dries completely. Every key on the keyboard works and feels just right - the Caps Lock light even works! This ‘hack’ is not for the weakhearted, and I would probably avoid putting a $100+ keyboard in the dishwasher. But if you don’t have any other options, it’s a pretty good bet."

BUT,

If you don't feel comfortable with that, you are always welcome to do it the old fashioned way. Get some QTips and isopropyl alcohol. Start carefully popping off each key (just try to remember where they go back!) and cleaning the inside square where the bottom of the key touches the plastic receiver. It is a bit tedious but might be less stressful than tossing out your keyboard.

I really hope this helps!

How to clean keyboard - sticky keys

If you're lucky, the coffee did not penetrate into the key membranes. Remove the battery, then try rinsing the affected area with clean water the same way you spilled your coffee. That way the water will go into the same areas. If you try some upside-down-on-an-angle rinse, the water may not get into the sticky areas. Dry immediately using a hair dryer set on low/medium.

Chances are it's ruined, but a few minutes of rinsing and drying might save your keyboard. Not much to lose by trying.

I did the same thing. Here's what I did:
Took whole thing apart. Cleaned any coffee with q-tips dipped in water / paper towels. Removed the keyboard. Ran it through the dishwasher with no soap in it and heated dryer off of course.
I let it dry for a day and was bummed that now the whole keyboard stopped working. Well then 4 days later to my surprise / delight.. the whole thing started working again. New keyboards on ebay were also very reasonable. But mine still works perfectly after the dishwasher cleaning.
