Have files on a CD that are read only. How can I remove read only so I can make changes to the files. Thank you.

You can use the xcopy command to remove the read-only attribute while you are copying files from a CD-ROM. Xcopy.exe resets the read-only attributes unless you specify otherwise by using the /k switch (this switch copies attributes). To use this method:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
  3. Type xcopy drive letter:\*.* destination /e /h, where drive letter is the CD-ROM drive letter and destination is the path to the destination for the files, and then press ENTER. For more information about command-line switches for Xcopy.exe, type xcopy /? at a command prompt.

I thing your file system is FAT32.fat 32 can only store file size of maximum of 4GB.change file system to NTFS.

To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
  1. Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
  2. In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, typing convert X: /fs:ntfs would format drive X: with the ntfs format.

When files are placed on a CD they are automatically changed in their properties to Read Only files. When those files are copied back to your hard drive they retain that Read Only property. All you have to do is bring up the file Property window and clear the check mark by the Read Only box. If you are using Windows, open Windows Explorer and browse to the files. Right click the files and choose Properties. The General tab should be the first tab that will open up At the bottom of that tab you will see a section called Attributes. One of those Attributes should be Read Only, and there should be a check in the box beside it. Just click on it to make the check mark go away and that should solve the problem.

The files are set to read only on the CD. If you would like to open them, please copy / paste the files to your PC and open them from there.

To rectify this in the future, please set the file permissions on the files before you burn them, and remoce the Read Only attribute.
