Hi,

Generally, this is Hardware Failure Error on HP Printers. You may try few steps before considering it is Hardware Failure.

  1. Without turning off the product, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
  2. Remove the cartridges from the product.
  3. Wait for the 'Insert Cartridges ' message to display on the control panel.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  5. Wait 60 seconds.
  6. Reconnect the power cord. If the product does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.
  7. Reinsert the cartridges, and then close any open doors on the product.
  8. If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so.
  9. Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product, and then try printing again.
If you still get this error,

Remove the Cartridges and Printhead
( Printheads are that hold the cartridge and it has a latch on right side to loose to remove the Printhead, if you dont find a latch, your printer does not has Printhead. Generally, Printers with only 2 cartridges do not have Printheads and any printer beyond this with 4,5 or 6 cartridges have printheads. Sometimes the cartridges are on left side or printer and Printheads inside the printer after you open front access door or you will find cartridges and printhead both inside the printer if you open the front access door )

Clean the contacts ( Electrical or Golden contacts ) using lint free cloth. ( Cloth damped with few drops of water, squeezed properly )
Put the Printhead and Cartridges back and Turn off the printer and turn on.

If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, Service the product as it needs repair.

If your printer is In-Warranty, Contact HP Tech support - 1800-474-6838 and they should be able to replace it without charges.

Regards,
Ron,

    Good job Ron.
One more thing that I've noticed can cause this issue a a "cued" print job across a wireless network that had been cancelled or even jammed.
To resolve this issue, delete pending print job, clear any paper jam and restart printer.

    All the best!
    Tsunami Dan

I have a rather generic question- should I expect a home/office all in one machine to last more than a couple of years. I do a moderate amount of printing. And should I expect to be able to print...

in simple - NO - No machine is built to last anymore. My experience is genrally between 18 and 24 months is about the life of this tyoe of machine and even if it is still going at that point the inks will become so expensive it is wioth changing anyway

Can't print after refilling cartridges

MFC-5440CN All-In-One InkJet Printer > Troubleshooting

That is the catagory you posted this under, next time post it under the one for a canon MP160 or at lease under a Canon printer. No help for you since you are incapable of posting under the right model, that means you are probaly unable to comprehend what i would even recommend. Have a nice day.

in the future be carful where you post, like for example i have no experience with canons, so there for all i could tell you is GENRAL troubleshooting, which you have probaly already tried. If this was a brother i would be able to hep more, so if you have posted it in canon then mabey someone there would be like me but know about canons

If I want to upgrade only one thing, am I generally best to upgrade the camera or go to a better quality lens ?

better quality lenses give you sharper images and the ability to shoot with less light. Having a newer camera will genrally only give you more megapixels that mean nothing unless your doing large prints
