I suspect that your starting motor capacitor has bit the dust. many AC induction motors require a starting capacitor to give the motor a boost past the initial maganetic pulse, especially ones that have a large load. You can probably purchase one at the Sears on line store, but they cost about 25 bucks, and this may not be the exact problem. It may be that the motor windings have shorted. You have a choice of replacing the whole door opener for 150 bucks or try replacing the starting capacitor.

Opener has been working fine for four years. Today, when I pressed the remote to get into the garage, the door opened for a few inches, then stopped, and now the motor will not run at all, via the remote...

The problem may not be the garage door opener, To determine this, Pull the emergency release to release the door from the carriage. (The red cord that hangs from the opener) Now you can press your garage door opener to see if your motor works. If it still does not work, try unlpugging the opener from the power source for approx10 seconds. This should reset your motor.

If the motor works, the problem is with door and not the opener and you need to consult a professional who can help you with this.

2010 BMW 528XI Garage Door Opener Homelink Setup

**** >>> This setup I performed with my new 2010 BMW 528XI Garage Door Homelink and Chamberlain Garage Door Opener <<< ****

Chamberlain:
01. Power off or unplug the garage door opener motor power supply (which is mounted on ceiling of the garage) ;;;

02. keep the garage door opener transmitter in your hand (do not press any button at this time) ;;;

03. In your 2010 BMW 528XI Homelink button (which resides under rear view mirror) press the 1st and 3rd homelink button together for about 30-40 seconds (i.e., until the yellow light blinks fast) and when the yellow light next to the homelink button blinks fast release from pressing the (homelink) buttons ;;;

04. now hold the garage door opener transmitter closer (means within 2-4 inches) to the homelink button (either 1st or 2nd or 3rd) whichever you are planning to program to open the garage door ;;;

05. now press the garage door opener transmitter button and chosen homelink button (either 1st or 2nd or 3rd whatever you need) together ;;;

06. the yellow light (next to homelink button) initially may blink slowly but after few seconds (may be 10-20 seconds) will blink fast; once it started blinking fast release from pressing both garage door opener transmitter and homelink button ;;;

07. Now plug or power on the main garage door opener motor (which is mounted on garage ceiling) ;;;

08. On the main garage door opener motor (which is mounted on garage ceiling) press the "LEARN" button (once you press it may have yellow/orange color light; make sure the light is on) ; then within 30 seconds do the next steps #9, #10, #11 very carefully ;;;

09. go to your car and press the homelink button you programmed and hold it for 4 seconds and then release it --> 1st iteration ;;;

10. again hold the same homelink button you programmed and hold it for 4 seconds and then release it --> 2nd iteration ;;;

11. again hold the same homelink button you programmed and hold it for 4 seconds and then release it --> 3rd iteration ** important note; generally three iterations are not necessary; and steps #9, #10, #11 must be performed within 30 seconds ** ;;;

12. during one of the iteration you will hear "CLICK" sound one-time from Garage door motor (which is mounted on ceiling) and if you have light attached with it; it will blink once (** if you hear the CLICK sound and/or light blinks once**) then the particular homelink button is programmed ;;;

13. now press the programmed homelink button; the garage door will open or close (but always it will take 3 or 4 blinks in yellow light or 2-3 seconds before the garage door opens or closes and which is normal) ;;;

** Thats it, your 2010 BMW 528XI Garage Door Opener Homelink setup is complete ** ;;;

You can program rest of the homelink button the same way but following from the steps between #4 and #13 ;;;

Hope this steps will help you to program chamberlain Garage door opener in 2010 BMW 528XI Homelink. ;;;

** possibly the above same steps may work with other BMW 5-series cars homelink too (but I'm not sure) **

My garage door hmmmms but will not open or close. How can I fix this?

Could be the start capacitor is bad. When this happens the motor will not start but just hums for a few seconds. Could also be that the door is open and jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. Is the door open or closed?

My garage door will not open. The motor hums when I press the garage door button but nothing happens. If I remove the chain, the motor runs as normal and the gear rotates as normal. If I put the chain...

Check to ensure one or more of your garage door springs isn't broken (they last about 10 years). Most doors, especially double wides, have two or more springs. If one breaks, as they ultimately will, the motor won't have enough mechanical assistance from the spring to lift the door; however, gravity and one good spring will certainly close it.

Craftsman garage door opener 1/2 hp will not open door

It sounds like your chain is out of sync with the limit switches. Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket on top of the motor unit. Now run the opener until the sprocket runs counterclockwise and stops. Now with everything attached and the door in the open position replace and tighten the chain. You are now in sync. You may need to tweak the up and down limit controls which are on the side of the motor unit.

Motor wont run on craftsman opener

You need to remove the cover and look at the drive gear. It is probably stripped. I really recommend a technician to repair your door.

Motor hums but nothing happens

I just had the same problem. Extreme cold, garage door stops working, motor hums, same here. I opened up the my garage door opener(after unplugging it), and found that the wormwheel had a wear spot on it. This is the gear that allows the motor to raise and lower the garage door. Any way, after the wife "sugested" that the door was too heavy to lift, I went and bought a new garage door lifter. But if you are handy dandy with tools, I have seen the wormwheel for sale here. http://www.aaaremotes.com/gearsprocask.html It's the plastic wheel that went bad on me. If I would have found this before buying the garage door opener, I would have got the sprocket assembly. I hope this helps!

25 yr+ old Sears opener runs past lower limit

Update: I remembered that I had a problem with the door reversing too much a while back. It was chattering in the tracks and I could not fix it with lubrication and changing spring tension. So I dialed up the down reversing force. This contributed to the jam-up I had when the lower limit was ignored. If I had a lighter force, it may have at least reversed.

After futzing with it I left it alone for several hours. The motor would hum every few minutes. I was considering cutting power to it overnight. I pressed the remote one more time and the motor ran normally to a limit and stopped. I tested it a few times then reconnected the chain and door. Seems fine now. I suspect an intermitten logic board problem. I'll try lightening up the down force and using it for a while.

The gear needs to be changed kit #41c4220a. Be sure to change the bottom bushing on the motor mount.

The garage door has power coming to it . When I press the remote the unit makes a humming sound but nothing happens at all

clicking can be an overheated motor from trying to much. other idea is troley opened too far and lodged against bolt on rail by motor.
