Hello, thank you very much. Unfortunately there is no Tooslink mini optical audio on the MacBook Pro. The only possible connector is the mini display port. Attached to it is a converter to female HDMI (outlet). That HDMI outlet I need to connect with the Yamaha HTR 5960

LOL, this is my first response, I thought I deleted it by accident, then found it - however here it is:

Hello, thank you! The ports on the MacBook PRO are as follows: 1 Power port, Ethernet port, FireWire 800 port, Mini display port, (conversion 3" plug to female HDMI is attached ( after configuring it should be possible to feed video AND audio streams to a receiver or TV /according to Mac user guide) further 2 x USB 2.0 ports, audio out port for headphone. There is NO optical audio Tosslink mini connector on the PRO. The only option I can see is finding a solution connecting that female HDMI connector with the Yamaha HTR 5960

I don't know that yet. It will take me some time to arrange that. I doubt it will work. Ok, thanks for the time being.

  • Johannes Vosseler Jan 04, 2011

OKAY, THANK YOU AGAIN. I think I got it now how to hook it up. I will go with the HDMI to 5 RCA cable/converter box. The ports are available on the Yamaha as well on the TV (Panasonic TH-42PX60U). Somehow it has to work. Takes some cash to invest. -:(

    Thank you again !

Hi, assuming you can pickup a good digital TV signal online, you can certainly connect your digital audio output to the receiver using a standard Toslink cable with a Toslink mini-plug adapter. Here is an example of the cable you would need: http://www.nextag.com/norob/PtitleSeller.jsp?nxtg=7420a280505-3C5E1BE5D8BAF95C&chnl=main&ptitle=661011573&tag=888720410&ctx=jGibfICWCJ8Pl1v84x0Fy0POJ0U8nsKWXqtnWffvJ8FyQWcSXVGi1g9vyaWcaQl6ez45TKa57b5%2FQPHsf2qbe7UPiIvmhplfDiwRnUeRnuNffo5Uly2xM1dEbpxXiXph1zleMHrrwwQeoDFKL%2FFIFArXNlVU9QjoOHhXQmBAi%2FejvazjML5Cf%2BWhD4Y3DTkyoFZ4OkNC4quT8cPJ9p50Tjw0CICjAeGhwBq1G62s1KCHMhMj6UM65iXNpmD3t%2FW1fbp4ZeY9JF9YbzlzYf8ALD%2FrmBi6C2P5okVECy3ZzIw%3D

This will connect to the optical input of your receiver. You can read a bit more here: http://hometheater.consumerelectronicsnet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=47126

Are you intending to also export the video to a TV? For that, all you need is a VGA cable to hook to the VGA port on the Mac. I'm assuming your TV has a VGA input, or you would need a VGA to video adapter.

I hope this is what you were asking for. If not, please let me know and I'll try again.

Thanks for using FixYa!

OK, I guess there are different Mac Book Pros. So if you have HDMI, you could port that to the TV and then pipe the audio from the TV to the receiver, right? Not sure what kind of TV you have. If you're not using the TV, then get an HDMI to component video adapter cable. These have 5 RCA jacks--3 for video components and 2 for audio. Will that work for you?

You can also try a cable like the one here: http://hdmitocomposite.com/

It all depends on if you're going to use a TV and what connections are on the TV.

The HDMI to video should work on and TV with RCA jacks, but it will not be HD unless you use HDMI to composite.

I think that will work just fine--have fun!

How do I connect apple tv to my Yamaha htr 5280?

If you have apple tv 1st generation then connect using RGB and optical for audio.
if 2-3 generations you cant, because newer models have hdmi only,
which is not present in your yamaha.

Humming coming from the speakers

From all speakers?

How is the audio connected to the TV (be specific)?

Keep in mind that a TV is not generally an audio source as its programming always comes from something higher up the audio food chain than itself. Get the audio to your receiver from whatever THAT is, not the TV.

Does your reciever use a remote control?

If so, you should be aware that on many recievers and surround amplifiers some of the functions may only be accessible via the remote control (the best way to learn about it is to consult the user manual).

I have a Pioneer VSA-730 surround amplifier and the only way i can change the mix levels for surround/sub/center speakers is by a remote control. My friend had the same problem and, after reading the manual, he discovered that he actually needs to use the remote control to access all functions of the amplifier.

Good luck and best regards

No dolby digical in DVD mode.

PCM mode will not output dobly digital, use the digital cable connection, not RCA cables, set DVD audio output menu to Dolby digital or DTS. On DVD software menu setup select audio then Dolby Digital 5.1 or Dolby Surround.

To get audio from your TV through your AV receiver, please connect stereo audio cables from an available AV input on the rear of your receiver such as D-TV/LD or CBL/Sat. Then refer to your TV owner's manual for more information about audio output to an amplifier. You may have to turn off the internal TV speakers in order to get any output from the TV into the AV receiver.

Playstation 3 audio connection into Yamaha HTR-6040 AV Receiver

Is Yamaha HTR-640 a receiver? Try HDMI from PS3 to receiver or Sony HDTV. If HDMI from PS3 to receiver the you need and HDMI from receiver to out Sony HDTV. You could connect everything to receiver and HDMI out to HDTV. You can not have an HDMI cable AND an optical cable coming out of the PS3, only one or the other.
