Check for a failing hard drive

Trying booting from the Mac OS X install disc.

insert the Mac OS X install disc.

press the start button, while holding down the "C" key on the keyboard

Once you are running from the disc. go to Disk Utilities select the hard drive click the "repair permissions" button at the bottom.

If you get any red errors listed or it doesn't seem to finish repairing the permissions you have a failing hard drive and it will need to be replaced.

Installed a new internal hard drive and when I try to boot up the machine does not recognize the new hard drive. There is no item in the select which drive to load from.

Boot off the install disk with nothing else attached to the PC. ( external hard drives especially ).
Choose ‘Terminal’ in the ‘Utilities’ menu
Then (substituting the correct values for your setup), type:
diskutil partitionDisk /dev/disk0 1 GPTFormat JournaledHFS+ my-hard-disk 111G
It’s all one line and hit return at the end.
You should see progress information, followed by a neat table giving the new formatting that has been applied.
‘/dev/disk0’ is how the operating system refers to the first whole disk in the system.

Then, the ‘1’ here signifies that you want one volume only on the drive.

Then, replace ‘my-hard-disk’ with the volume name you want to use. This is the name of the disk as it appears in the finder.

Replace ‘111G’ with the size of the disk in gigabytes. It’s usually about the same as the disk, and as the partitioning software will stretch a single partition to fill the disk it doesn’t matter too much. 111G was the value used for a 120GB HDD, because I knew that it wasn’t really 120GB.

Hope this is of some help.
If not a solution ( hard one to do over the net :) ) hopefully it will point you into a solution.

Data recovery

Unfortunately, a three disk RAID 5 can only tolerate a single drive failure. Is it possible that disk 0 and disk 1 were reversed? If so, then you might be dealing with only one failed drive and might be able to rebuild the RAID if you get disks back where they belong.

Otherwise, you will need to send the disks off to a data recovery service and hope for the best. This is only viable if the data is very valuable as this will be very expensive. Typically more than $1000 just to evaluate and diagnose.

Problem with Fujitsu MHT2080AH hard disk drive

Nothing can be done that is as cost effective as buying a new drive. Use the drive as little as possible, back up your data before it dies completely.

A professional could rebuild it for a few hundred dollars if you have a particular attachment to this exact model. But I can't think of any reason one might choose this route rather than simply buying another drive.

Parallel Desktop on Mac OS X

Ahh - Parallels is working but can't locate the disk image for XP (assuming) that was created by Apple's BootCamp.

Locate the image "disk0.hdd". Once found, copy it to your "Documents/Parallels/My Boot Camp/ " folder (you're logged in on the Mac as jeremybrunelle right ?)

Cant partition, format maxtor drive

Connect drive to be formatted as slave.
to check if your windows sees the drive and is it active go to your desktop and right click on my computer -> manage -> Disk management.
You should see something like the picture below:
Your first disk will be Disk0 and 2nd disk will be Disk1 If you cant see Disk1 then the drive is faulty OR not connected properly make sure the drive is working with cables attached.
Listen if the drive spins.
If it doesnt then something is wrong.
If you can see the drive there then you might not have made any partitions onto it. You can make new paritions to the disk right there, right click on your disk1(your 2nd hdd) and create a new partition.
