It takes about 10 minutes of restarting and opening my disc tray until my xbox reads that there is a game or dvd in the tray! and it then sometimes says there is trouble reading the disc. Is there something wrong with the laser reader?

I have the same preoblem with my 360. Try to take the disk out and power off the console. power it back on and let it start up without the disc inside. After this turn it off and restart the console. Put the disc in and it should start.

Its a problem with the sensor in the DVD drive of the console. You warranty may still cover it so if it continues I would call Microsoft at 188-4-my-xbox.

Sorry to tell you but in my experience the dreaded open tray message is your dvd drive dying....

use a dvd lense cleaner if that doesnt work take it to a game shop it prob the lasor.

I have had this happen about 3 times. The first time was when i figured out how to fix it. The 2nd and 3rd were temporary.(Just needed to be turned off for a moment) You need to shut the console off for atleast 15 minutes 10 at the lowest with everthing unplugged. I mean the hard drive, memory unit, and all cables, and adapters. Then after 10-15 minutes plug everything in and DON'T PRESS the BUTTONS ON THE XBOX OR THE CONTROLLERS. Press the button to open the tray and take out the game or dvd and put in a different one. If this doesn't work do it all over again and then put in a different game or dvd not the previous ones and turn on the console the same but then a soon as you get the disc in and closed in shut it off then open the tray and wait till you are at the main menu go into any program so you can't see it is reading and close the tray. If that doesn't work contact the xbox support line. Really hope this works for you.

check if you CD is break in the center. If it break, go in a EBGAME and told them your problem.

common xbox flaw mine does the same ,just keep opening and closeing the tray till it reads the disk,this can be very annoying .your dvd tray is probally on the way out

might be lens problem or alignment on dvd tray
