Question about Cameras
You don't say what make or model of camera or the size of the memory card, so I am going to have to do some guessing.
My guess is that the memory card is incompatible with the camera. That would explain why the card is not recognised and why the camera cannot format it (it tries to, but hangs). Maybe it is having trouble with the size of the memory. Memory cards have grown enormously in capacity in the last couple of years, and even relatively new cameras may not be able to cope with the memory size of the newest cards. It is often difficult to find out the maximum capacity memory card a camera will use, as today's cards are much larger that those available when the manual for the camera was written.
There is a common problem with SD cards. "SD" cards larger than about 1GB are actually SDHC cards. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but they are slightly different electrically. Many cameras won't work with SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.
