Question about KitchenAid Food Mixers

Open Question

I have an old Kitchenaid K5SS 300W, back when they were manufactured by Hobart. When I turn on the mixer, the beater occasionally hits the left-side of the bowl very lightly. The manual I downloaded from Kitchenaid shows that I can adjust the bowl height with an adjustment screw located on the pedestal but my model does not have that screw. I later found out that the adjustment screw was not a part of the original design, and added later. Does anyone out there know how to solve my issue? I am mechanically inclined and willing to work on it myself.

I noticed in the Service Manual:

"If the beater rubs the bottom of the bowl, it can be corrected by tapping the yoke arm with a mallet..."

Is it safe to assume that the yoke arm is what the bowl rest on?

SOURCE: beaters don't reach the bottom of the bowl

There is an adjuster on the model I own - the KSM50... It is a tiny little silver screw at the base of the motor between the screws that mount the bowl mover to the stand. Screwing to the left makes the bowl lower and turning to the right makes the bowl higher. I just adjusted mine. Note - just a slight turn can make a difference, but my screw was SO TIGHT- I had to ask my husband to do it. Plus, it is located in a difficult area for some screwdrivers to fit into. He got mine to budge and now my clearance of beater to bowl ratio is perfect.

:) Hope it works for ya,

SOURCE: Can't get the screw adjustment to change the height of the bowl

I had a similar problem with mine - the problem turned out to be that I hadn't clicked the bowl into place corectly. If you find the bowl is tilting forward slightly then you probably need to push it into the clip at the back.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid beater rubs bottom of the bowl

Your beater to bowl clearance has come out of alignment. This can happen naturally over time and with normal use of the appliance. This is something you may correct from home using a flathead screwdriver.

Unplug the mixer, with the bowl and flat beater removed. Tilt the mixing head back as far as the machine will allow. In the exposed hinge, behind where the bowl would normally sit, you will see a 3/8 screw exposed. Turn this screw half a turn counterclockwise (to your left) in order to raise the flat beater from the bottom of the bowl.

This may take a few attempts until the beater is clearing the bottom of the bowl again. If the adjustment screw will no longer turn, do not force it. It is only designed to move so far to make the appropriate adjustment.

Be cautious. Raising the flat beater too high may leave dry ingredients at the bottom of the bowl.

If further information is needed, I would advise you to contact Kitchenaid Customer Service. They may walk through this adjustment through you over the phone and can look into ordering replacement beaters for you also.

Their toll-free telephone number is 1-800-541-6390.

JOE:You don’t say if you have a ‘tilt-head’or a ‘bowl-lift' mixer, but you can easily download a PDF version of your Owners Manual from the KA website (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home).Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use KSM90P)and select the last file listed that appear under Owners Manuals:KSM90PSWW0.pdf (2930.74 KB)and save that file to your PC.You’ll need to have Adobe Reader to be able to open it. Turn to Page 11 and you will find the instructions for adjusting the mixer head height.I have extracted the instructions below:

• Turn screw (A) SLIGHTLY counter clockwise (left) to raise flat beater or clockwise (right) to lower flat beater.

If you over adjust the screw, the bowl lock lever may not lock into place.

Year of manufacture

  • The K5SS was manufactured from 1978 to sometime in the 1980s (don't know if it made it into the 90s). Hobart sold its Kitchenaid division to Whirpool in 1982. If yior mixer has the Hobart logo on it then it was from 1978 to 1981 9 or 2. If it is identified only as Kitchenaid then it was made after 1981.

I have a kitchenaid K5SS. The beater keeps hitting the bowl even after adjustment screws was adjusted. What else can I do to fix problem

Check the four large screws at the back of the motor housing. They screw up thru the pedestal into the gear/motor housing. If they are loose that can allow the motor to tilt forwards. Check also the ones under the pedestal base, I have never seen those ones loose though and they would not cause your problem.

One of my blades is stuck and I can't engage the release

Make sure your Beater can slip in and out of the Beater Shaft
easily. Do not force the beater onto the Shaft if the shaft is bent.
If it cannot be removed easily by hand, use a soft rubber mallet
(not a steel hammer) to slightly tap the beater so it can be moved
up and down the shaft or from side to side. Then you can easily
turn the beater left and remove it from the shaft.

From Kitchenaid Manual:
To Attach Flat Beater, Wire Whip, or Dough Hook
1. Turn speed control to OFF.
2. Unplug stand mixer or disconnect power.
3. Tilt motor head back.
4. Slip beater onto beater shaft and press upward
as far as possible.
5. Turn beater to right, hooking beater over pin on shaft.
6. Plug into a grounded 3 prong outlet.

It could be the worm gear has lost a tooth. It could also be tha tthe beater it hitting the side of the bowl and the head needs adjusting up a little bit using the screw on the hinge.

Are attachments for a KitchenAid K5 compatible with the K55?

That would be incorrect. If the attachment is for a hobart kitchenaid mixer then it will fit all models of kitchenaid mixers including the brand new pro series because the attachment port and drive gear has not been changes since 1925 or 6 when it was first introduce by the Hobart company.

Blade is hitting the bowl and the screw will not turn anymore

Turn the screw to the right. It will only turn a quarter turn. If that doesn't help try to file a bit of metal off the bottom of the beater. If you find this solution helpful, please rate it. ricardok45
