Question about Sony Handycam DCR-TRV520 Digital Camcorder

Open Question

I have a Sony DCR-TRV520 camera and want to transfer tapes to my PC (Windows 7). I purchased a converter cable to connect the AVi port on the camera to a usb port on my computer, but the computer will not recognize the camera. I do not have a firewire port on my computer. Is there any way to do this?

SOURCE: connecting to computer

i don't know if this a great solution. anytime i tried to port video from the camera to the computer(vista), i couldn't get it to work. i bought a dazzle, but sorry folks i think it's junk. take video, stills and DV to memory stick then read it from there. it works great. i spent alot of time trying diffrent ways and this way is the best. pull you're dvd's from there too. one more thing- lightscribe and label flash are extremely over rated.

I'm sorry for the difficulties you're experiencing in transferring videos from the Camcorder to the Windows 7 Operating System. The USB streaming driver for the Camcorder is not available for Windows 7 OS from Sony at this point. Hence it is not possible to transfer videos using USB interface. You may use i.LINK or A/V interface to transfer videos from the Camcorder to the Computer which is running on Windows 7 Operating System. If your computer does not have the i.LINK port, you may purchase an i.LINK capture card to resolve the issue.

Please follow the steps to transfer video to a computer using an i.LINK connection (IEEE 1394).

IMPORTANT: Video capture software and a compatible video capture card must be installed on the computer. Depending on the computer manufacturer, various video capture cards and software (Adobe Premiere, Roxio Video Wave, Microsoft Windows Movie Maker, etc.) may be available or already installed on your computer. If necessary, contact the manufacturer of your computer for further information.

NOTE: Many Sony VAIO computers are bundled with Sony DVgate Motion or DVgate Plus software for video capturing. Some VAIO computers also include Click To DVD software that will allow video capture to the computer hard drive or directly to a DVD.
  1. Connect an i.LINK cable (also known as IEEE 1394) to the i.LINK port on the digital camcorder.

i.LINK Cable.

i.LINK port.

shajanrs_144.jpg

  1. Connect the other end of the i.LINK cable to the computer.
NOTE: The computer i.LINK ports and capture cards may have either 4-pin or 6-pin connections. Sony digital camcorders use i.LINK ports with 4 pins. If your computer only has a 6-pin i.LINK port, then it will be necessary to use a 4-pin to 6-pin i.LINK cable.
  1. Turn on the digital camcorder by moving the POWER switch to the VTR position.
  2. Cue the camcorder tape to the beginning of the video footage.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Start the video capture software on the computer.
  5. Begin playing the recorded video in the camcorder.
  6. Begin importing the video with the capture software.
It should now be possible to copy the video using the video capture software if the computer hardware and software are configured correctly.

Thanks for understanding. Please let me know if you require any clarifications.

Hi I am trying to transfer videos from Sony Handycam to PC. The files transfer and are saved as .avi but neither REAL nor Quicktime will play them back. There are various versions of PAL listed on...

Have you tried running the .avi video files in WMP (Windows Media Player)?
If that doesn't work. You can always convert the video files to Real or Quicktime formats.
Not sure if there are some free web sites that convert AVI Files.
If not, you could buy a lifetime subscription of one video converter for a low fee.
One good one is called MOVAVI.

Re: PAL Code selection. I think that it all depends in which region you're in so that you could playback the video on your TV via AV/Audio Cable.

See this, it answers to most of your queries:

The CD that came with the camcorder is not compatible with Windows 7. You have to go to Sony's site and get an update. See if the following link is useful:

http://www.sony-asia.com/support/download/415262

I think USB streaming is not supported in Windows 7, so probably iLink is the only option available to you, which anyway is better than USB in terms of less frame drops and capture of DVD quality. The camera has 4 pin ilink port. Check whether you have 6-pin port or 4-pin port or both type of ports on your computers. Laptops generally have one 4-pin port. Desktops can have more than one iLink ports and can have both 6-pin and 4-pin. 4-pin port would look exactly like the one you have on your camcorder. You can find a photo of 6-pin ports at

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:IEEE_1394_Firewire_PCI_Expansion_Card_Digon3.jpg

If your both the computers have at least one port with same number of pins, then you can use one cable for transferring to both.

You will need an ilink cable with 4-pin male to connect to camcorder and either 6-pin male (http://cgi.ebay.in/4-Pin-6-Pin-DV-iLink-Cable-/400180203017?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash=item5d2c994e09)or 4-pin male (http://cgi.ebay.in/4-Pin-4-Pin-Firewire-IEEE1394-DV-iLink-Cable-/400180205113?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash=item5d2c995639) to connect to the computer side.

Transfer the video from my Mini DV to PC

If you have a dvd recorder, you can hook up the cam to a recorder if it has rca jacks on the end of the cable.
Or if your handycam has a memory card slot, record straight to memory card or transfer memory to memory card, then place it in a computer with an sd memory card slot.

Any computer or electronic store should have a 4 pin firewire cable. Your computer should have a firewire connection as well.

You can connect your camera with PC through USB port only.
