SOURCE: acer 5100 help me
OK this is the only way I can get my P.O.S Acer 5100 to work and it does NOT always work...
First off, I downloaded an updated Bios (3.10) it was from the Acer U.K. website and the program to flash it..(caution it may fry your computer) but i was ready to gut this thing and send it back to Acer with a thin layer of horse S*&T on top..there customer service in non existant for this modle....
after flashing the Bios I did a full system recovery from the disks I made when it was new...restarted it and it WORKED....
well it worked for about 2 weeks then the "media cable error" message came up again...if you get the Acer screen hit F2 and you will see your $800 laptop is not detecting the hard drive or dvd rom...hit control alt delete to restart and TAP the right side of the laptop above the hard drive HARD as it boots...if you get really lucky it will work until the next time you move it...seems to be a bad connection near the hard drive...ALSO..my P.O.S has the built in webcam..it will work until i move the cam, it seems to short out the laptop, i get the blue screen of death and it will restart...
if you do get your running I sugest coping all your files, pictures and anything else you value from the hard drive, formate it and SELL IT ON E BAY AS-IS...most bring around $200 for parts and go buy a Dell...
Acer is total ****, mine has been back to Texas for repair 4 times and is not out of warentee..they said I should of bought the extended warrentee, I asked why you people have had it more then I have...you should replace it for free...no responce from Acer...
OH and the left button on the palm rest fell into the laptop after 2 weeks and they refused to repace it for free, said it was user damage
hope this helps you with your POS Acer media connection error

you can do check HD follow me:
1) open the cover at back of laptop
2) take out HD body see picture
3) put it back in same way, then power on if bios find HD, the error message should be gone.

I have three kids with the same Acer Aspire 3680-2681. All in over a year have had this. The first sat til we gave up and just tore apart. Put back together, it worked, better. Nothing done. The second, a couple months later, we just took out the hard drive, made sure it was in the correct and full way in, and it worked. This week, the third, same problem, same solution, Took out the hard drive, put it back in snuggly and it worked. It has two screws that SEEM to hold it in place but it does slip out. BEFORE you do all these other ms-dos things and other crazy time consuming file losing pictures forever gone things, try this, and bring a can of compressed air, get the dog hair and dust out while you are there.
It seems to be a small engineering thing with the screw placement and holding of the thing securely in my humble opinion.
