Not the answer I was hoping for. Unit has worked OK for years.Bought new about 6 yrs ago I think.

Display just quit 1 day ago.

Could live without it, but I need it to assign optical input to new Apple TV just purchased. I want to run Apple TV through receiver.

I wish the menu for that could be displayed on TV screen.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
Two things that can cause the lcd to fail. The soldered wire that attaches the lcd to the mainboard may be loosen that's why it has no display or the lcd itself is faulty. If that's the case the lcd should be replaced.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

This is a very very common problem with the STR-DG800. The displays are very bad about quitting. Sony has had problems with this since the receiver came out. Some people have complained about the display being out when they take it out of the box. Some last a couple of years. But it is for sure the biggest problem with the receiver. You can take it to a Sony service center to have it fixed. But I suggest a new receiver. Because they have done nothing to fix the display. So if you have it repaired, then it could go out again tomorrow. But it could last a couple of years. It is a risk. Should not cost more than $180 to repair the display. So it is your decision. Good Luck!

SOURCE: Front display on STR-DG800 receiver

Hello,

it seems the receiver is having a power problem. It might have worked fine in the past, but that's electronics for you. Power surge, irregular power supply, excess power supply, etc can affect the unit thereby not making it to power on.

This unit must have a power supply board in it where power enters from the mains. A capacitor, fuse, diode, etc may have been defective on the power board and maybe that's why its not making the unit turn on. There might also be some disconnection or something, inside the unit which is not making it to power on.

To actually find out what's wrong, you need to disassemble the unit with a screw driver and check what's wrong. You will be needing a meter in order to test the components on the power board, once you detect any bad component, you can make necessary replacement at any electronics accessories store withing our vicinity. This is the only way by which you can detect the problem.

Of course, testing the power board with a meter will require someone that has the ability. So it you can't, then you might be needing the help of a repairman or you can call a friend that has the ability to help you out.

I wish you the best of luck.

Sony receiver str-dg800 will not power on.

Unplug the unit from the wall and remove the outer case. At the rear of the main circuit board is a fuse. Check the fuse to see if its blown. If not, go to the transfomer at the front of the receiver and check the fuses at the transformer.

Sony str-dg800. Pre-amp out has no signal.

Hello. Jacks you are refering to are surround preamp out only. If you want full range audio out use video 1 audio out or video 2 audio out. The set does have a mono subwoofer out. You could have to go into the menu and turn it on but that is where you are to connect a subwoofer to . Larry's Electronics. ledstiles@hotmail.com

Sony Model: STR-DG800

You've got a short in one of your speaker wires either at the receiver (most common) or at the speaker itself. you should only have a 1/2" of each side of the speaker wire stripped to put on each terminal, and when you strip them, twist them so there are no frays in the strands that will touch the other terminal. The receiver is protecting itself from harm. Turn it off then disconnect all speaker wires, examine each wire carefully before reinstalling, then turn the receiver back on. If it still says protection, look at each speaker and reconnect your wires the same way. If you still have a problem, disconnect the wires again at the receiver and turn on, at this point, if it say's protection, it needs to be serviced. Hope this helps

Do you have your ps3 connected to the TV with HDMI and then audo cables from the TV to the receiver? If so, you need to make sure you change the audio settings on your TV to surround sound.
