Question about Brother EM-630 Typewriter

1 Answer

No Characters Typing

Brand new out of box brother em-630... i can see the daisy wheel moving and striking but nothing appears on the paper. i tried word processing mode, and nothing prints using the print function. just opened it this morning - i can see where it worked when factory tested. no letters or numbers will show up now - have removed ribbon, daisy wheel, and correction tape, and replaced all correctly and still won't type onto paper. not even getting a light hit.

This sounds similar to my problem only when I press delete, the typewriter strikes the ribbon and instead PRINTS the letter.

The ribbon does lift, it lifts out of the way of the striker. It is almost like if I had a whiteout ribbon installed, it would be typing in white, and whiting out in black. But the two ribbons are nothing alike and you can't possibly install them wrong.

Could be the ribbon is not lifting, do you see an image on the ribbon, also may be twisted inside the cartridge the shiny side has to be facing the keyboard.

Keyboard want work

If your machine is not printing properly:
1.Examine the ribbon cartridge to make sure it has not run out of Ribbon. If your ribbon appears silver or gray, install a new cartridge.
2. Ensure the black lever in the center of the carriage is pressed to the rear, towards the paper. If not press it to the rear to lock the Daisy Wheel into place.
3. With the typewriter turned off, press and hold down the "CODE" Key, the "SHIFT" Key, and the "TAB" Key.
4.Restore power with all three Keys depressed.
5.When the machine sounds a beep tone, release all three keys.
6.The carrier will move to the left indicating that the memory has been cleared and the machine has been reset.
7.Try typing.
If the problem continues, your unit will need servicing. You can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center in your area:

Daisy wheel will go to the letter pressed, but the hammer will not strike. It moves along like it's typing, but the daisy wheel is the only thing responding.

Make sure that the ribbon is moving. If characters are piling up in the same spot on the ribbon you will get this problem. Easiest fix is to replace the ribbon. Many brand new ribbons can have a problem. If this dosent solve the problem it may be a mechanical problem with the mechanism that drives the ribbon, requiring a technician to repair.

Typewriter suddenly will not print!

It's been awhile since I've worked on these.

What is the typing mechanism in here? I believe Brother was using a wheel.

Cannot get daisy wheel to type correct letters

Turn oFF the typewriter, take the ribbon out.....use the lever on top to release and remove the print wheel cartridge. Lightly rotate it to see if it will move and reinsert the cartridge. snap it back into place.
Turn on the machine, the typewriter should move the carrier to the left and reset the printwheel....if it is snapped back properly.
