Question about Philips DVD757VR DVD Player/VCR

Open Question

Are there any known problems with the DVD757VR power supply as I have a unit that is showing no signs of life (no lights etc). All fuses appear in tact.

No power

Look if you can safely get it apart for the fuse inside the unit and if possible test the power cord and where it connects, this is the place to begin---total dead units are usually easy to fix, follow the AC voltage from the wall or voltage source inside to the fuse etc.

Check the power supply capacitors to see if they are bulged.
If they are replace them, this should fix the problem, if not replace the main board.

otherwise replace the power pcb

A power surge seems to have burned out my Toshiba TV/VCR combo.

The power supply does have fuses. They require removing the back cover of the unit. Note: High voltage is present so I recommend having a pro do this.
In units like this many times a part will fail and the fuses will be ok. At this point you will need a pro again.
I would replace the unit. The repair cost could be in the 60 dollar range depending on the severity of the problem and shop rates in your area.

Have you tested the power supply? Try switching out the power supply and see if that gets you up and running.

Blown dell motherboard

Have you checked to make sure it wasn't the power supply? If this motherboard is still inside the pc and the cd/dvd lights up, or the network card shows life, fans, case lights, etc: than I would rule bad mobo. If nothing shows signs of life, try power supply or even better maybe a lose connection.Check all cabling and wire plugs. Clean out any dust.

It would help to know a few things; Is the power supply coming on at all? - Fan should be running, front panel light(s) coming on at all, etc.
You also didn't mention if it is a fairly standard clone or a brand-name system, model number, etc.

If there is no sign of life when turning on, it is most likely the power supply - the low-end units are incredibly cheaply made and prone to failure at random.
If it is a standard unit and you have no life signs, replace it. They are available from $10-100 dollars.

If you do have signs of life, watch the monitor screen for any signs of video.
If there is any kind of display, the BIOS is at least reacting and if the system is over 5 years old, replace the coin cell battery located on the board. These are widely available- even Walmart.
Obviously, the unit shuld be powered off, unplugged and you should touch some bare metal part of the chassis to discharge any static you might be carrying around.

If you have any worthwhile information, you might want to post it - it kinda, sorta helps.
