Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I thought I had backed up my c drive in my external hard drive, so I went ahead and reinstalled windows xp. Now when I connect my external hard drive there is nothing on the c drive and it says 1kb right under it. I had copy and paste my c drive to my external hard drive, apparently it didn't work. Now I'm trying to see if there is any way I can get it all back, maybe by restoring my computer...HELP

No there is no way of getting it all back as you have overwritten your hard drive. You can try by using win_undelete.exe to see if you can retrieve any of the data that may be left.
Sorry.

Missing or corrupted system 32 wont install off windows xp disk

try going to the bios and change the boot sequence for hard drive to cd
put the copy of xp in the external hard drive and reboot the computer
when it powers up it should boot up off the external hard drive
if that works go to computer --device manager and find recovery section
you may also go restore to a previous date and try for a fix from there
go google and get to microsoft and find that file download for xp and install it
if all that works shut the computer down and reboot back to bios and change back to reboot from hard drive
remove the disc from the external hard drive

> I do not want to screw anything up.

First, purchase a new internal disk-drive (newer? faster? bigger?) and set aside your current disk-drive, rather than "overwriting" any of the files on the current disk-drive when reinstalling Windows.

Second, reinstall Windows.

Third, reinstall the Maxtor software that you used to do the "backup".

Fourth, connect the OneTouch, and use that Maxtor software to "restore" the files.

Since your "original" disk-drive is not connected to your computer, it is IMPOSSIBLE to "screw-up" disasterously.

I want to repair my windows xp sp3 and i dont want my information in my documents and desktop to get erased.......wat to do plz repl

The best way to guarantee your documents will be safe is to back them up to an external source. I would recommend purchasing an external hard drive or USB stick depending on the size of your documents. You can then copy the documents to the external hard drive and be confident in repairing or reinstalling Windows XP without loss of data.
I would recommend that you regularly back up your data to an external source regardless of reinstallations however to prevent possible data loss due to unforeseen circumstances.

You con go to your "My Computer" Icon, right click. On the menu that appears click manage. You will get a Computer Management window. On the left side of the window is a menu. Under Storage, chose disk management. Once you click on Disk Management you will get a display off all your connected disks on your computer, including your hard drive, CD drives and any external drives. If you external drive is powered up and connected, you should see it. If you do see the external drive, you can right click on it in the right side of the window and select "change drive letters or paths" You can then change you external drive back to the letter you originally marked it.
I hope this helps. If so, please leave positive feedback for me.

thanks,

Brian

Computer dies at start up

Does the computer startup when plugged in? Try to remove the battery and plug it into a wall socket then turn it on. If it still does not start, the problem is not the battery. My initial thought if it's not the battery its the Operating System (OS) in your case Windows XP. I had this same thing happen to me last week after Adobe updated itself. What I needed to do was reload my XP OS. If you have the original restore disk that came with the computer, use it and reinstall XP. If you have files on your laptop that you need to keep and are not backed up externally, you will need to get those files extracted from the hard-drive before you reinstall the OS. This can be done by removing the Hard drive from the computer, make sure the computer is unplugged and battery removed before you do this. Take it to you friendly neighborhood computer geek and have He/She run the hard-drive externally to extract the files and place them on a disk or a flash drive. This is also a good time to have the hard-drive scanned for viruses or maleware so you don't reinstall the on the computer. Wipe the hard drive and start to reinstall. If this is more than you can handle, you can get someone locally to do the work for you and it shouldn't cost you more than $100.

I cannot reinstall windows back onto a working h.drive? PLS.HELP!

Your hard drive went bad. It seems that the kernel and some sectors on it unable to accept any data for installation. Try to use a Partition Magic software before installing Windows operating system by doing the format manually. Then you can install you Windows operating system that you want. Thank you.

Windows Server trying to boot from external hard drive

go into your 'update settings'. there is a section of where it asks you about how you want your settings set and where to send updates to. You may find the problem here. Check all the 'advanced' settings as well. If your Western digital is plugged in via USB and not requiring updates, unplug it while starting your system, after complete start up, reinsert the USB plug. It may show new devise found, then from here, you may be asked to reinstall it to stop the rebooting.

Try borrowing a compatible HDD instead of buying a third one for testing and check if the same error exists. Try also using an external DVD drive to see if your internal CD-ROM is defective. Try also using another Windows XP CD installer. You can also use other OS installation CD to check it. Otherwise, there is something wrong with your lappy's motherboard due to tear and wear, heat, vibration, misuse and shock.
