Toilet is running

The most common reason for a toilet to continue to run is a problem with either the flapper or the entire flush valve itself. The water is slowly draining so the fill valve keeps running.
The flapper is the least expensive and easiest solution, so start their. It's usually around $5. If that doesn't solve the problem, I would purchase a flush valve kit, around $20, and replace your flush valve.
*Note: If you have to replace the flush valve, you have to take your toilet apart. Start with the flapper.

How do I know which pieces I need from a hardware store? I'm visiting my mom for a couple days and her toilet just stopped working. I think I need a couple pieces from the hardware store, but I'm not...

The normal way would be to look at the toilet first. There are a number of parts that wear out or break..

The most common is the chain that is attached to the flush lever breaks or pulls out from the flapper in the bottom of the tank.

Sometimes the lever itself will break inside the tank. There is also a metal hook that joins the lever to the chain that lifts the flapper, those can corrode, bend or break.

Sometimes the flapper will leak, but that just makes the tank keep trying to fill itself every 5 to 10 minutes.

If the inlet valve is broken, it may not let water in at all but that is rare.

Just take the lid off and look. That hardware chain has all the parts. They are listed on this page.

What are the most common venting problems for toilets?

What all that means is the sewage pipe going to the street is getting clogged so either snake it with 50 foot snake or go buy so Drain-O (60 ounce bottle costs about $9) and pour 1/5 in toilet and wait 10 minutes then pout 1/5 in Bathroom sink & wait 10 minutes. Keep do that until 60 ounce bottle is empty. Let this stay in pipes for couple hours and your toilet will double flush now its clean with no corrosion, hair, cooking oil, and other debris.

I have a toto toilet that doesn't start to refill until a couple of minutes after I flush. Any ideas. Thanks.

Several ideas. Start to fill? Have you looked inside the tank to see what's going on? If it just filling very slowly, then you most likely have some calcuim build up inside your flush valve blocking some flow, if this is the case you will have to clean the flush valve. If your flush valve is staying up and the toilet is "running" unitil the float drops. The float (either the arm ballcock style, or newer fluidmaster) is rubbing on either the flush lever or side of the tank, and taking longer to drop to let the water start flowing. I

I bought a toilet from homedepot in toronto 6 months ago. from yesterday, it keeps to refill the tank like every 10 seconds. but i can not see where the water leaks

There are a few likely causes for a toilet to leak and refill. The most common is the flapper not seating properly. Usualy on an American Standard it is a disc. Either way, they are fairly easy to replace. One test I use to see if the leak is comming from the flush assembly is to put a couple drops of food coloring in the tank and wait a few minutes to see if it appears in the bowl. If so, there is a leak in the flush assembly, usualy the flapper. Hope this heps. Please vote to let me know.

This type of flush system can be re presurised quickly by holding down the flush handle for about good 2 minutes, then release , wait for the tank to be refilled with water.
Now you can flush away your inner rotting mess down tube good-by...
