Harley 1200 sportster won't start after running a while

I just bought a sportster the problem is after it runs a while and you kill it then it will not crank for about 1 hour last night it died while i was riding it and wouldn't crank. I put a new coil and ignition module on it what else could it be?

    I have a 2003 XL1200C I purcahsed it from a Harley Davidson dealer in January and have only put 200 miles on it (I do have an extended warrenty) . If I ride for over 10 miles and stop, cut off the gas and go in a store. Return in 10 minutes, turn on the gas the bikes starts right up and then dies in 1000-2000 feet. It will not start until it cools down, then it is fine. Is this something I am doing or should I take it to the dealer?

    Thanks, Bob rrb@verizon.net

Make sure your kill switch is off, check battery voltage across terminals, should be 12.6 volts. Check for loose connections at battery, starter and at frame ground.

New battery on new bike,it kills the batterys in 2 days

Either you have a dead short in your wireing or your battery is not charging fully. Use a volt meter your battery will have 12 volts start the bike and it should read 13 plus then take it up to 2000 rpm above idle anyway it should read 14 plus. If you dont have these numbers then you have a stator or regulator problem or both. You may be geting a slight charge when running but not enough to keep the battery peaked out.

Starter removal

It's quite a process to remove a starter on a sportster. I changed one for my friend on his 03 sportster. You have to take alot of stuff off to get to the bolts that hold it on. Can I suggest getting a service manual for the bike. Trust me it's worth its weight in gold. I've done alot of work on my sportster and my friends sportster and would never attempt anything without the book. As far as the starter, From what I remember, I had to remove the exhaust pipes then the primary cover, and I'm sure there were more parts, but you need to know what gaskets you will need to replace. Good Luck. And go get the book. I got mine at Barnes and Noble. and my friend got his at the Harley dealer. Have fun.

Stopped running

Check your alternator. Or the Alternator belt.
Sounds like you basically used up the rest of your charge in the battery after the alternator went out.
let me know.

2006 HARLEY SPORTSTER 1200 LOW

If you're talking about dieing at an idle, you can increase the idle slightly to keep this from happening. Do not increase it too much, Harley's are not designed for high idle.

04 1200 Sportster - backfires - cuts out - fouls plugs

Turns out the crank sensor needed to be replaced again (second time in 8 weeks or so!). In the last week Harley has sent out a "improved" crank sensor that does not have the issues of the original. Therefore if you replace it once you shouldn't have to do it again and again. Bike runs great now. We will see - though - my local service manager promises it will stay that way.
