Question about Hampton Bay 24002 Ceiling Fan

1 Answer

I have two hampton bay ceiling fans that have a mind of their own. I've always had problems with the one fan turning on by itself (both the blades and the light). This had been going on for about two years. The second fan just recently started doing the same thing. What is the problem? How can I fix it?

We have 6 Hampton Bay fans and a ghost at our villa in Aruba. Lights come on, fans come on on different speeds when we are not home or when we are sleeping. It's driving us crazy!

Sorry, couldn't help but grin.

The remotes operate in the radio frequency range and are probably susceptable to more than just the frequency transmitted by the remotes.
Just think of ALL the 'remotes' we have today! It is inevitable that this kind of problem will multiply.
Many cell phones are 'spread spectrum' which means they sweep through a range of frequencies to avoid eavesdroppers with scanners from tuning in.
The remote supplied with Dish TV for rooms away from the actual receiver also use RF to communicate.
Also, garage door remotes may operate in the same range and newer ones also change frequencies in concert with the receiver to prevent people with 1000 watt CBs (illegal) from just keying up while rolling down the street and opening random garages. I have a friend who delights in doing this still today cruising through tracts in his area.

If they were mine, I would ground the housing (or the input of the receiver inside) of the fan through a few different low-value ceramic capacitors to find which one will allow the receiver to still be usable but able to ignore outside signals of lesser strength.

I'm afraid I can't give you explicit solutions on this one since it would take a good bit of experience to do what I described above.

We have a hampton bay ceiling fan model 54cvt. We cant figure out how to change the light bulb or change the direction of the blades. We dont have a manual for the fan.

This fan is also known as the Hampton Bay Covington 54 Ceiling Fan. You need to turn the globe anti clockwise until it comes out. The full instruction manual can be found here.

In theory, they should. Try Hampton Bay first, and if not, check for aftermarket replacements. Those remotes are simple enough that there is no reason that they can't.
