Question about Kenmore 55603 Side by Side Refrigerator

3 Answers

Have a kenmore side by side model # 10656166500. None of the freezer door controls are working. So no light, water dispenser, etc.... This unit was unplugged for a while and I just plugged it in and started it and see this problem.

    Joe,

I can't find a fuse and there is not one shown anywhere on the schematic that was with the unit. Basically, nothing happens when you try to activate any controls on the freezer door. I can press the unlock button and it shows an indicator that looks like it is unlocked. But the water and ice levers do nothing and the light doesn't work. Water is getting through the filter and the ice maker is working. I assume there is a valve that should be activated when you press the water lever but I hear nothing when I press it.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Joe,

I found a connector under the top freezer door hinge that was disconnected. I connected it and now the light and the ice dispenser work but still the water dispenser does not work. I press and hold it for a while but nothing happens. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Steve

We have a Kenmore side-by-side Coldspot. We got the ice maker working and the freezer door controls all work now that we found the loose connection under the top hinge. However, the water lever still does not work. I can't tell if the switch is working or not but definitely the valve that allows water to flow does not actuate. Any advice on how to check this?

  • steve_edstro Jan 04, 2011

    Rick,

Thanks for the detailed response. I found that the connector located under the top freezer hinge cover was disconnected. Once connected most of the freezer door controls began working. The only remaining problem that I can see is that the water dispenser lever does not activate the flow of water. When I press it there is a noise like a low hum (hard to hear if the fridge is running) but no water flow even after pressing for minutes. The ice maker is working so I know there is flow through the filter. I'm not sure how to go at this problem.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Rick,

Thanks for your advice, it was helpful. The short story is it is fixed. The long story (in case you're interested) is I got behind the fridge to check the wiring around the solenoid and found that somebody (prior to me getting the fridge) cut into the rear panel to get at the top of the partially buried connector and replaced two sections of wire. One red and one violet. The violet one was the wire from the water flow switch to activate the water side of the solenoid. For some reason, and this is the part where I have to shake my head and wonder, they connected violet wire from the solenoid to a red wire from the buried section of the rear panel. There are two violet wires coming into the top of the old connector joined to the one that comes out the other side to the solenoid. So the way they had it connected when you pressed the water lever the condenser and fan would start but there was no potential across the solenoid. Connecting the wires correctly solved the problem.

Thanks again for your help and have a great new year!

    Steve

Ok so you have no power going to the freezer door correct ok look at this diagram http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/partsdirect/showSubComp.pd?imageUrl=http%3a%2f%2fc.searspartsdirect.com%2flis_png%2fPLDM%2fK0505001-00008.png see part number 20 which is your wiring harness assure that you have power coming up through the harness with a multimeter would be the first step in finding out where the problem is from there if you do have power then you would go to all the spots that this harness plugs into one is the switch part number 14 there is another switch as well part number 18 each of these need to be tested to assure they work properly by doing continuity tests on the switch with the power unplugged yes even part number 13 which is the light socket you would also check for power if you have power coming up through the harness if you dont message me back and we will start further down the harness and figure out why you dont have power to that harness but first assure that there is power there. And as I also tell everyone if you are not familiar doing electrical tests do not try this call a technician always better to be safe then sorry with electricity. Also any further questions please message me back and when our chat has concluded in full please remember to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation Thanks again and Happy New Year

ok if you take off that front panel you will see how the arm hits the switch press the switch manually to see if the switch is working if the switch is working then you would go to the back of the machine down by the compressor usually on the right hand side if your looking at your unit is the water valve you can actually take a extension cord cut off one end and connect some connectors so that this becomes a powered jumper wire then you can disconnect the line from the water valve that goes to the front door and unplug both sides of the valve then touch the powered jumper to the water side this will activate that side of the valve if it is good note by activating the valve water will come out keep your jumper wire far away or you can connect a smaller line and have that line go into a bucket this way you can see the water going into the bucket when you put power to that side of the valve if the valve dont work replace it message me back with your finds I await your reply and please remember when our chat is concluded to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation Thanks Again Rick

p.s you can also remove the switch (its small and delicate) and do a continuity test on the switch to assure that it is working

Hi.

There is no fuse in the unit. If there is a fuse, then the fuse is built in with the power cord. If the fridge is cooling, then the problem is either one electronic control board, or wiring/connector.

The fridge is fixed accessing parts and reading volts in wiring harness and connector.

If there is no power at all, and fridge is not even cooling (no compressor activity), then test the power cord and wallsocket.

Here all parts and diagrams for this unit.

Regards.

Ginko.

Hi Steve,

There may be a blown fuse in the fridge. Check the manual for any references to fuses and replace accordingly.

Get back to me if this doesn't do it and I may be able to help more.

Hope this helps!

Regards,

Joe

Ice and Water not dispensing. Light button not working

http://www.repairclinic.com/0100_1.asp
There's an ice- or water-dispensing problem The ice and water-dispensing system of your refrigerator is quite complex. Many components work together to provide the ice and water. Aside from a simple problem of a leaky water tube or a jammed ice chute, most other components are not user serviceable. We suggest that you contact a qualified appliance repair technician for such repairs.

After changing the water filter, the ice maker is not working. The water dispenser is working properly.

You may need to replace the dual water control valve due to only the water dispenser side of the water control valve being the only side that works. What is the model number of your Kenmore refrigerator? Kenmore model numbers look like this=> 321.235689 as an example. An example of the water control valve if your model number was 321.235689 is part number=> 12001414 Water Inlet Valve

Don't use this example as the correct part. Look around the fresh food section door frame for your correct model number, Thanks

in the past i have seen this happen when the ice ben is emoved and the drive impeller is not seated properly usually due to ice ect. Its a pain but take out the ben and see if the motor turns normally. you can hold the door switch closed by hand and have someone push the button for ice if the motor turns you have the problem i have said. If not your door switch is bad and needs to be replaced it controlls the power to the bulb and the ice maker motor. You can pop the door switch out with a flatblade screw driver but have a replacement on hand wire plug into the back of it the switch is an on off switch. Make sure you unplug the ref first electricity bites...

Kenmore s/s f/f; ice dispenser working; water dispenser not

If you can't hear the solenoid on the water inlet valve(it's on the back where the water supply hooks up) when you try the water then the water switch on the dispenser is at fault.

If you do hear it Your water line could be frozen in the door. You can disconnect the line under the unit before it goes into the door at the bottom hinge. Push the dispenser button and see if it comes out there. If it doesleave the door open till it thaws.

If it doesn't come out there disconnect it at the water inlet valve and see if it comes out there.

Freezer door lost power, will not dispense ice or water, light does not work Kenmore/10 years old /side by side

Check the door switch.
If the door switch is not working the light will not work and the ice or water will not work.

My Kenmore side by side unit leaks water onto the floor and the water dispenser has stopped working. When I hit the dispense switch I hear water squirting.

Probably the plastic tube that came from the solenoid is broken somewhere between the solenoid and the dispenser(usually under the refrigerator).

Whirlpool Side By Side not making Ice, but water dispenser works

I just resolved an issue with my kenmore elite side by side refrigerator icemaker (model 106).
It was expensive because I took the long road to fixing the unit myself.

My problem: No water going up to the freezer water dispenser into the icemaker but the water in front of the door working just fine.

-first thing i tried was the simplest. The Internet is clogged with this miracle fix of using a hair dryer to melt the frozen water line going to the dispenser output. This is highly unlikely for our model since the water line is protected within the refrigerator frame.

-2nd thing I replaced my water filter (thinking that there wasn't enough water pressure to trigger the solenoid valve. $40, and still no luck.

-3rd thing was I tested for voltage going to the solenoid. No voltage going to solenoid, so I wasted $30 for a new solenoid.....still no water.

-4th thing was I ordered a new IR sensor and receiver (since the reciever end is where the relay that sends the voltage to the solenoid to turn on and allow water to go up to the dispenser).
My IR sender and receiver appeared to be working flakey.
Installed, still no water. $58 BUCKS ON EBAY (EVERYWHERE ELSE $100+)

-I finally removed the freezer front little white door, I TURNED OFF THE FREEZER SWITCH SO NO VOLTAGE WAS PRESENT, removed the release latch underneath the freezer unit and disconnected, and removed the freezer unit to inspect it further.
When I removed the protective white cover that covers the mechanical wheel, I had a few parts come flying out of it. Turns out that the wheel accessories were damaged. THERE ARE NO REPAIRABLE PARTS ON THE FREEZER UNIT. I FOUND ONE ON EBAY FOR $39 BUCKS + $9 SHIPPING! $48 BUCKS, SWAPPED THE HARNESS AND BOTTOM COVER, AND IN 20 MINUTES, I WAS BACK IN BUSINESS. STARTED MAKING ICE IN ABOUT A HALF HOUR!!!!!

when in doubt, replace the freezer unit for $48 bucks! 7 out of 10 times it will fix your problems. All techs replace the IR set at the same time too which will set you back another $58 bucks.
Good luck! ;)

Water dispenser...

I had the same problem, in reading a bunch of other similiar issues with various models, the best thing I found was that the water line inside the freezer door is frozen. I had to isolate this portion of my water line from the wall all the way through the frigde. It you unplug, take out screws from he back cardboard cover so you can follow the waterline through the fridge. The valves are pretty easy to take apart/put together. To take apart a valve, just press down on the ring around the valve the pull the connecting apart. To put back together, push the same ring down, then push the connection back together. To check the water flow, plug the fridge back in and have some one push the water dispenser as you check each valve. I suspect the problem is in the freezer door, so you should just check the valve under the bottom left side of the freezer door. From here to the dispenser the water line goes through the door. I used a blow dryer to heat up the inside of the freezer door just behind and below the dispenser unit for about 5 minutes. Try and run the water again and it should work. Good luck
