Hi, assuming the hdd won't finish a format, it is possible that some sectors are damaged. If you still want to try and use the hdd even with these defects, you can try and partition the hdd. Guesstimate at what point the hdd stops responding and really guess where the defects end. With this info, partition the hdd into 3 with the middle containing the defective sectors. Format only the first and third partitions. For simplicity, Win98 might be easier to work with rather than XP. Hope this be of some help. Do post again and let us know how things turn up.

You will need to reset/clear the Cmos. If you have lost your password, depending on manufacturer, you might be able to reset the HDD password without knowing the original password, but this is not usually the case.
Its a simple procedure of shorting a set of jumpers on the mainboard. You should find instructions for How-To in the user manual for the mainboard. If you don't have the manual, you can usually do a search online and download A PDF version. If you cant find a manual, you can try removing the cmos battery from the mainboard. Make sure all power is disconnected befor you attempt this. If you use the battery option, you will need to leave the battery removed for at least 10 minutes to clear the settings.
Hope this helps FixYa! If you find this information helpful, please leave some positive feedback to let us know.
