My girl stepped on the notebook when it is running, then it fails to power up, what can I do now?

It is likely the lcd display has cracked or dislocated. Try connecting a normal vga monitor to the monitor port and select the external monitor from the keyboard using the F4 key or whatever function key has the display symbol.

If the LCD is the problem you should be able to run from the external display.

It is then a matter of replacing the lcd display or continuing to use the external display. A new lcd will set you back about $200 to replace.

<b>Hardware works but wireless doesn't and you're getting the limited or no connectivity error.</b><br /> <p><b>Please note:</b> This document assumes that you have checked that the wireless NIC is turned on and that the Wireless Service and DHCP Service have been checked and that they are both enabled on the notebook and the services are running.<br /> <b>If you're unsure about the services do the following:</b><br /> 1. Start &gt; Run &gt; 'services.msc'<br />2. Search for DHCP Client in the services list. The Status should be Started and the Startup Type should be Automatic. If not, right click on the service choose properties and fix the Startup Type to Automatic. Click OK to close the window.<br />3. Search for Wireless Zero Configurations. The Status should be Started and the Startup Type should be Automatic. If not, right click on the service choose properties and fix the Startup Type to Automatic. 3. Power cycle the router
Unplug the router and let it sit for 30 sec.
Power down the notebook.
Plug the router back in and wait for all the lights to stabilize
Reboot the computer.
After the computer makes it to the desktop test the connection.
If the connection fails go to step 4.
If the connection works resolved.
4. Confirm that the connection is set to b or g (depending on router)
Start > Right Click ‘My Computer’ > Manage > Device Management > Network Connections > Right Click on the Wireless NIC > Properties > Advanced Tab
Click on Wireless Mode under property
Make sure that it is 802.11g or 802.11b depending on the router.
If the connection fails go to step 5.
If the connection works resolved.
5. Move the notebook closer to the router (within 3 feet or less).
In some cases the antennae may be damaged or disconnected from the Wireless NIC.

Set Data Encryption to TKIP (if not already selected)
Enter Network Key (confirm case of letters)*
Confirm the key
Click OK
*Note: copy and paste does not always work … type the key in manually!!! (garbage characters can exist in a copy and paste or spaces may appear!!!)
Test the connection:
If the connection fails go to step 7.
If the connection works resolved.
7. Mac Filtering
Hard wire the notebook and verify that MAC filtering is not enabled on the router.
If it is disable the filters and test the connection.
If the connection fails go to step 8.
If the connection works resolved.
8. Verify Channels
Start > Right Click ‘My Computer’ > Manage > Device Management > Network Connections > Right Click on the Wireless NIC > Properties > Advanced Tab

Try restarting the computer using Safe mode or Last Known Good Configuration.

Step 1: Turn Off Computer.
Step 2: Power it back on, as soon as you press the power button, keep tapping the F8 button on your keyboard (donot hold it down) until you get a black screen.
Step 3: Select Last Known Good Configuration.

If that fails, Follow step 1 and 2 then select Safe mode.
If that does not work, you will have to reinstall Windows using a Windows Operating Disk (In this Case you will lose all the data that is in your C:/) Drive.

My hard drive fails and it wont boot. What is the best solution to it?


If its a HP notebook then perform the har drive self test.
Here are the steps below.
Steps for HDD self test.

  1. If the notebook computer is running solely on battery power, plug the AC adapter into the notebook.
  2. Shut down the computer if it is running.
  3. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
  4. Press f10 when the HP/Compaq logo displays.
  5. After the BIOS Setup Utility displays, use the Right Arrow key to select the Diagnostics menu.
  6. Select HDD Self-Test options .
  7. Press enter to display a list of HDD/Self-Test options.
  8. Select Notebook Hard Drive and then press f10 to display an Estimated test time .
  9. Press f10 to continue. The Hard Drive Self Test executes a Quick test , a Comprehensive test, and a SMART test.

If the hard drive fails then surely there is no option other than replacing it....
Please surely buy HP Hard drive.

Is there a reset button to start the power on the computer? When I push the power on button, the computer does not turn on.


You can try a couple of steps before.Romove the battery only and try to start it with just the AC only.If this fails try step two.Remove the battery and the memory.Press and hold the power button down for twenty seconds.Replace them and try again.Step three remove them again,this time remove the hard drive and the cd romas well as the battery and the memory.Press and hold the power button down for twenty seconds again.If this fails chances are the motherboard needs to be replaced.

Have you held down on the power button for more than 10 seconds to be sure the unit is off?

If not unplug power cord and remove battery if all else fails

Battery


AC only will not effect speed what so ever, running on battery only does. Battery only decreases the speed, it's the speed step technology to make the battery last longer. If a fail safe in the battery engages, it could effect the machine's performance, so if you see any decrease in the performance, remove the bad battery and run without it.
