Question about JVC HR-S3500 S-VHS VCR

1 Answer

Tape won't load

My nine-year-old HR-S3500U VCR refuses to allow the tape basket to load. An acquaintance suggests replacing the mode switch, which he described as a circular electromechanical device that's probably mounted on the main board. Is he right?

Hi, I have a JVC HR-J658 VCR that doesn't eject tapes.

You mean a tape is stuck inside? Disconnect power and open up the cover. If the tape is stuck around the posts, free it and by manually turning the loading motor you can slowly get the mechanism to eject the tape.

Mechanism problem

The problem is in the loading basket, the left gear may be binding, or the basket timing has been knocked out of sync so it is not able to complete the cycle to load the tape.

I have a Mitsubishi U57 VCR. Works well but have a tape stuck in it. Any suggestions on how to get it out?

Unplug the vcr for 30 seconds, sometimes the tape will eject, failing that ! remove the top cover of the vcr "2 to 6" screws. Now! if the tape is spewed in the mechanical parts and wrapped around the video ahead, get a pair of scissors and carefully cut away the tape and remove any particles, next hit the eject this should remove the cassette without difficulty. If all this fails the problem lies in the vcr itself, a bad idler assembly, broken drive belt, or loading basket problem which will require a technician.

After unplugging my vcr and replugging it in it began to say tape in but it doesn't have a tape in it

It might be the mode switch. This tells the computer chip what position the VCR is in. It can go out of phase due to dirt (Just spray the Mode Switch with Servisol video 40 to cure that). Or it can go out of phase due to a mechanical fault. IE: some plastic part has broken etc. The mode switch itself can wear out.
If cleaning doesn't work, or you discover a fault, the mode switch may be then out of position. Setting it up right will almost certainly require a manual. As they very often need to be set up when the VCR is a position which nine times out of ten is not the eject mode!

I have a HR-J625EA JVC VCR & video cannot be ejected.

this sounds like a sensor problem the vcr thinks the tape has been ejected and then turns off! this will cost more to fix then a new VCR!

MINI DV TAPE WON'T LOAD

First power off the unit, then remove the DV's tape housing , power up the unit, and allowed the mechanism to go back to the unload mode, make sure that the tape posts are at unload mode. then unplug the vcr back again, put back the tape's housing in the load position (tape in) power the vcr back on and push eject button to reset tape mechanism.

not to overlook the obvious but check to make sure the record safe tab is still on the tape. (little black tab on lower left corner on back of tape)if tab is gone the machine will not go into record mode.

Machine won't stay on

Hi I'm not familiar with your model, but what it sounds like is a bad "end sensor" on your machine. There are photo sensors on either side of the cassette basket which is what holds the tape in the machine. There is a light source that ends up inside the cassette when loaded, which shines both left and right. There is a section of clear tape inside the cassette at both the beginning and end of the tape. When the sensor on the left side sees light through the clear tape, the VCR knows you have reached the end and goes into rewind, when it sees light on the left side, it knows you have reached the beginning of the tape, and stops rewinding. This sensor is also used in some models to sense when you insert a tape in the basket. In that case, if the right side end sensor goes bad, the VCR always thinks you are trying to load a tape, so it doesn't want to give them up, and when you rewind, it never senses the beginning of the tape, so it will shut down when it reaches the beginning, and could even snap the tape. I'm 99% positive that is what is wrong with your VCR, it is an easy fix, but unfortunately, you won't likely find a repair shop that will sell you the proper sensor. I hope this helps in some way. Good Luck!

Video tape gets eaten on rewind

Does the machine play tapes well? Clear steady picture and all? No tracking bars? wavering sound? Tape chewing is generally a problem with a bad Capstan Pinch Roller, Associated symptoms are as above. Please do recheck or confirm if any of the above problems are also present.
