Try soaking with a mixture of about 1/8 cup of bleach and filling with water. It does a great job on my coffee cups.

Black (rust colour) stains in the carafe

The fact that is is a stainless steel container makes it highly unlikely that it is rust. You should never drink out of a rust container. I would suggest a highly caustic but non-toxic cleaning agent. I'd start with vinegar or lemon juice. If you can get your hand in there, let it sit for a while and give it a scrub. Steel wool would definitely get the nasty stuff off but may also compromise any type of protective coating so inspect the metal to see if it has any type of coating over it (like an enamel glaze) should be bare stainless though.

Cleaned inside of microwave with all purpose cleaner, now it runs but does not heat up food.

Remove the plug from the power point and make sure that you completely dry the inside of the microwave with a clean dry cloth , keep the door open for drying. If by any chance the liquid or the water has seeped into the magnetron port then it might have clogged and damaged the unit.
Please check this section inside the chamber and dry this soft spot fully before you can try to switch on the microwave.
If this wont work then check the fuse inside the unit and the thermal cut off switch if this has tripped.

Is there any known do-it-yourself fix for the nutone vx-550 overheating problem?

there is a way to do it, yes. However, are you sure that the PC board inside is not what is causing the problem?? I mean, are the lights on and function normally when you turn the switch on or off??

If so you can proceed to bypass the two thermal cut offs located on the field coil on both sides of your motor inside. Yes, it can be done without taking the motor apart.
Also, move the other thermal next to the motor and attach it to the housing near the back of the machine. DO NOT remove it unless you absolutely need to. IE test the unit and let it run for approx 20-25 mins. if it does not shut off there is no problem with the last thermal cut off. If it shuts down within 5 mins, take it out too. It could be faulty now.

Good luck,
Mark

Dyson runs about 5 min then shuts off

REMOVE AND CLEAN FILTERS AND YOU MAY FIND IT WILL WORK OK IF STILL CUTS OUT YOU MAY HAVE A FAULTY THERMAL CUT OUT BLOCK INSIDE THE MOTOR HOUSING
THIS HAPENS WHEN DYSON IS USED WITH CLOGGED FILTERS AND HEAT DAMAGE TO THERMAL BLOCK

AVERAGE REPAIR COST £45 - £ 69 FOR NEW REPLACEMENT

I have a Miele turbo plus solaris and the red warning light is on. This prevents the vacuum from working. I have changed the bag so I am not sure what to do?

I had this problem with a different model. It's caused by a thermal cutout switch in the motor. My problem was a result of a filter being removed and the bag not seated correctly, hence dirt got into the motor and clogged the turbine, reducing airflow through the motor and causing the over heating.

If your motor runs at all, you probably have a blockage. Replace the filter inside the bag compartment just before the motor vent. Check the hose isn't blocked. Check the exit air filter.

If your turbine is clogged, it's a big disassembly job best done by a professional. If you really want to know how to cure it and feel you can tackle it yourself, email me. alan_at_alanjohnston_dot_com.

If your motor doesn't run at all and the light just quietly comes on, you have a break somewhere in the thermal protection circuit, either in the wiring (unlikely) or inside the circuitry buried inside the motor itself. I had an open on the thermal switch where the combination of heat and vibration deoldered the thermal switch from its board.

Hope this helps.

Vacuum shuts off after short run time . it will turn back on after about 5 minutes but then dies again

Hi,
This is overheating and tripping the thermal cut-out on the motor.
You need to strip off all filters, clean or replace them (if caked solid). Very often panel filters can be cleaned by knocking them on an outside wall, then a good blow to clear loose dust.
Dyson's often overheat if the filters are not cleaned.
Make sure belts are in good condition, and beater brushes only contact the floor slightly. You need to adjust this hight for different floor surfaces - or it will overheat on thick carpet.

Can't clean little green collection tank

You could try a solution of hot water and baking soda. Works very well for coffee residue on a carafe. Dilute and filter the soda before pouring solution into the tank . then hold the tank and swirl.

Hoover Windtunnel shuts off

I found the following solution on this website. I have searched for hours and finally found this solution, it works! I HAD the same problem after cleaning the filter mentioned below, it is now working like it was new.

***by maverick_bea***
yes this machine has a thermal protector in it to shut off the machine if it gets to hot, this is normal. if there is no clogs in the hoses or in the machine then you will need to wash the filter at the top of the machine. you will have to remove the dirt cup and at the top you should see a half moon orange, well inside of this piece is the washable filter, clean and let it dry completly before putting back into machine. if this gets dirty and has not been cleaned, you can lose alot of suction. in some cases if this filter is not cleaned it can cause the machine to overheat so bad that it can damage the motor.

Hoover mach 3 cyclone vacuum shut off during useage. can't turn it on. cleaned it out and let it sit thinking overheated? this is 2 months old. help?

I had same problem. Turned out to be the filter that sits above the waste cannister. Remove the waste cannister. There is a little orange lever that releases the filter. It was caked with dirt not allowing any air flow causing the motor to overheat.

This foam filter gets dirty pretty fast.
