Question about GE GSS22SGPSS Side by Side Refrigerator

3 Answers

About every two week, I have to take the cover off of the coil assembly in the freezer side of the refriderator and unthaw it. The back is condensor of the back is clean and there is no air obstructions around it. The evaporator just keeps freezing up. Air flow to the evaporator is clear also. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Have you checked the defrost heater or the defrost timer. All refrigerators have a defrost system. They hide the timer . I don't know were on the GE but they put them on the bottom behind the kick plate or down by the compressor.... its a ablong plastic box about 3" with 4 wires hooked to it.with a round knob that turns that you can manually put it in a defrost. The heater are in the evaporator compartment either a glass type or wire type with a defrost termination switch somewhere in the circuit. Hope this helps.

This is usually a sign of a leak with low freon. Check all of the inside vents and the seal for any damage or blockages.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

Sounds like you have a defrost issue. Hence your unit is not defrosting. All of this apply's if your freezer side has ice on it. If not. you have other issues, this does sound funny, but this is why your refrigerator side is warm, or not cooling.

Here is a list of some things that can go wrong.
1. Defective heat coil
2. Defective defrost timer
3. Defective defrost sensor
4. Defective Fan
5. Defective compartment inlet damper (on some models)

You should call a service company to resolve your issue.

Since I tried to help you, Please help me and Rate/Vote on the response. Thanks

The outside of my fridge freezer feels warm sometimes is this ok

That is a very bad sign, but before you unplug it pull the machine out from the wall and check to see if it feels hot back there as well. Then remove the lower cover and find the condersor fan motor. Its the only fan back there. I'd willing to bet that the fan is not running. The purpose of the the fan is draw air across the compressor and blow it through the condensor therefore lowering the temperature on both parts. When its not working/ running, the heat from the compressor and the condensor is pass onward to the machine and the machine then acts as a heat sink.
Also, if the machine is too close to the wall or the condensor coils are dirty you'll get the same effect, so be sure to check those things out as well

Hi MDstuff,

Stopped cooling.  Check the backl of the freezer to see if the Coils are Frosted completely.  The buzzing sound could be the frost touching the  Fan in the back of the freezer behind the cover. Sounds like your Defrost heater has gone south.

1. unplug the Freezer, power down.. for safety

2. Clean all the food out of your Freezer,

3. Remove the shelves and Ice maker tray stuff.

4. REmove the panel in the back of your freezer

5. Is the Coil(Evaporator, Radiator)you see  frosted up?

6. At the bottom of this coil. you should see a metal assembly that stretches accros the bottom of the coil with a wire connection on both ends. This is the Defrost heater.

Remove the heater and look to see if the heaterspring inside the glass tube is broken.  If so, get a new one from Ebay, or www.repairclinic.com.

In the mean time while your waiting on a part, Use a hair dryer to get rid of all the frost and put your freezer back topgether.  You sahoul get 2 or 3 weeks of service on your Freezer, before it happens again.

Water is leaking from time to time in the front of the refriderator. It's not the water feed.

Hello,

Your problem is likely that your freezer has a blocked drain which doesn't allow the water to drain to the bottom of the evaporator pan under the fridge. The lower backing INSIDE the freezer needs to be removed and the plughole cleared. Best to use a hairdryer and your fingers to remove he pool of ice buildup. Try not to use sharp objects as this can dislodge or break essential plastic pieces. Water should now drain from condensor coils during defrost mode out the drain and into the evaporator tray under the fridge. (melted water is simply evaporated away by the warm air which comes from your compressor and out of the front bottom of your fridge.)

I Hope this helps. Good luck

Motor making noise and whines air doesnt seem to flow from freezer side .

Could be your evaporator coil is frozen up on the freezer side. Remove the four corner screws holding on the cover plate. If the coil is frozen over use a hair dryer to unthaw. It only takes about 5 to 10 minutes so most of your food should be okay. Check your manual and see if you can start a manual defrost cycle to check the defrost circuit out. I sometimes have to do this to my refrigerator. Not sure why just yet. Hope this helps

I have a 20 year old sub-zero refrigerator. For the last two weeks the refrigerator is so cold that everything is freezing. If I turn down the thermostat the freezer warms up.

It sounds like the freezer side is losing its capacity......All cooling done on the refrigerator side is done by air flow of the fan in the freezer compartment by the evaporator coils(aluminum fins looks like a radiator)
You might want to pull the back panel of the freezer section and look at it.
Normally it is fully frosted when running(whitish snow covering on evaporator) If it is only partially frosted it has a freon leak or compressor problem. If it is engulfed in frost and there is no air flow possible through it your defrost system has failed. My guess is it is partially frosted and you have a freon leak.

Also check the fan by the compressor is running on the outside and the condensor coils on the outside on the bottom are clean.( fan runs when compressor runs)

Ge tpx21pr side by side refig/freezer Freezer is not cold enough

If your unit is NOT a static condensor, (the type with cooling fins and tubes on the outside of the back of the unit) If the door seals are okay and sealing properly, you might need to service the forced air condensor components located at the rear lower area, usually behind a fiber board cover. Remove the cover and look for dust on the condensor fins and fan blades. If clogged, carefully brush, vacuum, or blow the dust out, opposite the direction of the fans natural air flow direction. (You don't want to lodge the debris further into the condensor fins.)..Be sure to unplug the unit first.

GE PSC23NSD SS refrigerator malfunction

Check the cover in back of the freezer for for frost build-up. I think Frost reached the evap fan-blades and stopped it from blowing cold to the ref-side. Contro;s can be confusing. The ON-OFF controls how long the compressor runs, and the other dial how open or choked the airflow from the freezer into the refrigerator. Sometimes it happens that you have that flapper shut and no air is getting moved to the reefer. If frost is on the cover you have dead heater elements on the evap coils or a faulty hi-temp limit switch, which is the disc thingee at the top of the coils. A bad timer also may disallow it going into defrost - think about it. Chris in big bEar

Refrigerator cools, but no freezer fan & no condensor fan running

Check the back of you fridge and make sure the coils are clean. If you have access to a small air compressor, blow everything out and make sure the motor are is clean. The build up of dirt on the coils will not let the heat escape during the cooling process.
