See if you can operate the laptop using an external keyboard. If you can this will help for the next stage.

1.) Did you upgrade from Vista to Win7? This can cause issues with the keyboard filters.
Try to (using the external keyboard and mouse) download the latest drivers for the the motherboard

2.) Have you at any time spilled liquid on the laptop? Dried residue, especially from sugared drinks like coke can cause not only shorting of the circuits but also corrosion.
If this is the case, you will need to open the laptop to try and clean the affected area, you might need to replace the keyboard also

I would have said that the issue lies with the Bios version, however, if, as you say, it has just done this, then the issues is a serious one. Without any means of accessing the bios with an external keyboard to make the changes I was going to suggest, or to upgrade the bios, I am thinking that the keyboard controller and now the uSB controllers have gone on the motherboard.
This is beyond anything i can advsie you with and suggest that you get in touch with HP, or take it up with the company that sold it you. HP have a very bad name for reliability with the DV series of laptops and even if it is out of warranty, you can push the case with them as there a a number of cases where this has happened.

You could try resetting the BIOS first by pressing F1 or DEL on power up, if your KB allows it. This MAY re enable KB function.
BUT the chances are that the keyboard ribbon cable needs re-seating in it's socket. This is usually separate from the touch pad flexi cable.

Lenovo Touch pad Stopped working

If you're positive you didn't unplug or rip anything while installing new USB ports, trying checking/updating or rolling back the drivers for the touch pad. Installing new USB ports could have mis-configured something and disabled or modified your drivers for the touch pad.

Start-up display does not come on; laptop or external monitor (no bios?). No keyboard entry for set-up menu no response, touch pad does not switch off. wireless does not switch on.

Complete hardware failure : most likely it's the chipset on the motherboard the one that overheated and failed - well known manufacturing problem in this model. You will have to replace the motherboard.

there is a key combination that enables/disables the touch pad. it's the Fn key + the function key that shows a little mouse icon in blue at the top of your keyboard. on Fujitsu this would be Fn+F6 for instance. if this doesn't work, it is possible that the touch pad has been turned off in the BIOS setup. you will have to enter the BIOS and enable or automate the "internal pointing device"

Compaq 3702 keyboard not working

Try to go to the Bios of the computer..Power on the computer and hit F2 continuously until you reach the BIOS or blue page..If you were able to go to the BIOS it means that the keyboard is working..Also try to go to one time boot menu..Power on the system and hit F12 as soon as you see the ACER logo..It is also one way to check that the keyboard is not faulty..

If you weren't able to go to the BIOS or Boot Menu..You need to replace the keyboard and also the touch pad of the system but if you were successfully go to the BIOS or Boot Menu it's either the driver of the keyboard and pointing device or software conflict..

  • If you are using XP and you have the OEM disc..You can perform system restore inside windows or in the recovery console..Here is the link for system restore in recovery console http://www.myfixes.com/articles/system..
  • If this will not work you need to reinstall the operating (fresh copy, data deletion)
