Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have two T-42 think pads with the same problem. They will not boot. Message says "cannot find operating system". I have the IBM recovery disks. When trying to run them get message saying " problem on initializing" The hard drive icon/indicator light does go on either of the defective machines. It seems that I cannot acess the hard drive. Is the hard drive controller on the mother boards of the two defective machines burned out? What would be the fix. Replacement of the mother boards? I bought the two machines in an as is condition on ebay. I have swaped the hard drives around and can get recovery system to work in the third t42 I have that works. It seems

It seems that the recovery disk u are using may be defective.Try to load os with another os cd.If every thing goes fine replace the recovery cd,otherwise it may be a defective motherboard.consult thinkpad service.

There are many error messages that appear on your screen that make your heart flip, but I suppose the one that is certain to bring you out in a cold sweat is when you boot up your pc and a message appears saying Operating System Not Found!
You have good reason to get into a cold sweat with this error message because, nine times out of ten, there is a serious problem and that problem can be one of many, such as:
-The BIOS hasn't detected the hard drive
-You have an incorrect Master Boot Record
-The hard drive itself is damaged

What is the problem when uyou switch on the IBM

You probably need to replace the BIOS battery. This battery is small and on the inside of the laptop connected to the motherboard. It stores the BIOS settings, date and time. If this battery becomes worn out then it will cause your issue. First try and press F1. Navigate to the last tab and select to restore defaults, then save and exit. If the computer boots up fine but the next time you use it the same message appears then you need a new BIOS battery. Alternatively your HDD may be damaged if it cannot find a boot device. Check your HDD is recognised on the boot menu by pressing F12, select it and press enter and your OS should boot. Hope this helps,

I have an Ibm think pad laptop and I went to turn it on the other day and the ibm screen comes up with press F12 for bios set up on bottom but dosent go pass this screen no cursur and no sound got any...

Use IBM boot disc that was supplied with your computer. If that doesnt work use the operating system disc that came with it. If you have neither of those and the operating system was installed from the factory on a different sector of your hard drive try to start the computer up 3 times in a row and the computer should say safe boot or even boot from diagnostics etc. If you dont see any of that at all possible hard drive failure occured and you will be looking at gettting a new hard drive $50-$150 depending on size (newegg.com). Do you have the operating disc or not? if you dont then you will need to call IBM to see if they can send you a disc, if thats a no go then you will need to purchase one (newegg.com).

Continuous windows xp startup failure

That's usually caused by a bad system driver. Next time it boots to the "start windows normally" page, select 'safe mode'. If the system boots well in safe mode, you can start from there by replacing the drivers from the system board on up until you've solved the problem.

I just bought a used ibm think pad laptop

Hi there.
If you have just bought the laptop chances are the operating has been removed to you cannot see any data that used to be on it, you need to go and purchase a windows OS that the laptop was built for (i'm guessing XP) and re-install the operating system again.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
