How do I change the E-mail key function to start a different E-mail program when pressed with a gateway CEoc78 wireless keyboard

The above information worked. My guess is when the Microsoft updates are downloaded to your computer, it switches programs to their default programs. Now I know how to change it back.

Then a menu will drop down. select the email program you want and you have an option of allowing the others by checking boxes. Do this for all of your preferences and click save or ok.

What do the f keys mean

The 'f' keys at the top of the keyboard are known as 'function keys' - they have special functions inside a program, an application or in your operating system. They can be pressed alone or in combination with other keys, as 'ALT', "CTRL', 'SHIFT' or 'Fn' keys, to present other functions.

In Windows, F1 generally brings you the Help for the program you're on, F3 gives you the Search box, F5 refreshes the page, F11 gives you a full page in Internet Explorer and so on. Most programs can be closed when you press the 'ALT' key together with F4.

So, inside each and every program, different functions can be attributed to the F-keys, providing you with different capabilities. For instance, you could search in Google for "Word function keys" to check how they were set up for Microsoft Word.

These keys, associated with the 'Fn' key in some laptop keyboards, can be used to increase or decrease the display brightness, start the Internet Explorer or the Media Player increase or decrease the sound volume, and even open the DVD player 'door' - it will depend of the characteristics of the different models of laptops.

Hope this helps!

Emachines wireless not working

Try looking in the program list for the program that starts the wireless. Click Start/Programs and look for the program that drives the wireless and open it.

Maybe you don't have your wireless turned on. Look on both sides and in front for the Wireless Switch and turn it on.

Also once the wireless switch is turned on there are keystrokes that can toggle the wireless on or off. Normally you would Press and Hold the FN function key located at the lower left of the keyboard, then hit the correct F1 thru F12 key that toggles the wireless. The correct F1 thru F12 key to hit will have the wireless signal icon )))) on it. Or it might have the icon of a tower with the wireless signal icon )))). Normally the screen will display Wireless On or Wireless Off when you toggle the wireless.

Configure keyboard buttons

Status: No need for registry backup, the 1.1 version of the software allows you to delete all key modifications within it, in order to return your keyboard to normal.

I came across a nice utility for changing keyboard keys in Windows. It's called Sharpkeys. Basically, you open the program, select which keyboard key you want to change (such as Left Alt), and choose what key you want it to actually be (such as Left CTRL). Here's the website:

http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/

On the 7405gx, it will do all of the keys except for the Function key and the special hotkeys that control volume, mail, etc. For example, I assigned the "'\" key to the left of the spacebar to be "Left Alt" and the left alt button to be "Left CTRL", because those keys are more natural for my fingers to press. Physically the keys look the same, but their functions are now different.

Once you've installed the program, open it and you will see a black screen with green text and some buttons. To add a new key assignment, do the following:

1. Click the "Add" button
2. To select which key will be changed, click on the "Type Key" button on the left under "Map this key (From key):" and click the "OK" button OR select the key from the list.
3. To change what character is actually typed when you press the key, do the same as #2 except choose the "Type Key" button the right under "To this key (To key):"
4. Click the "OK" button.
5. Click the "Write to registry" button.
6. Click the "Close" button.
7. Restart your computer or logout. When you load back up, the key changes will be in effect.

You can revert to the original state by clicking the "Delete all" button.

This is a neat program because you can change your laptop keyboard keys to do whatever you want. Please post any comments, questions, or suggestions and I will update this post as necessary.

Wireless on my compaq c60 is disabled but i cant find a switch to enable it. Can i use function keys and if so which?

I am unable to find a photo of your laptop's keyboard, so I cannot be certain which function key will enable your wireless adapter.

However, most laptops are very similar, so this solution should work for your problem.

1) Locate the secondary function key (probably labeled "FN") on your keyboard.
2) Locate the key which controls your wireless adapter as a secondary function. It will have the following image on the key: http://cdnsupport.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2007/Phantom/WirelessIcon.gif
3) While holding the FN key, press the wireless key
4) Your wireless adapter is now enabled. If you are still having wireless issues, the problem was not that the hardware wireless adapter was disabled.

I need an explanation as to the secondary function of the keys on my NB305. Mainly the top row of 'F' keys, but the remainder of the keyboard as well. What do all these little symbols on the keys mean?

F1 through F12 are called function keys because they execute programmed functions when pressed. Used in combination with the Fn key, keys marked with icons execute specific functions on the computer. The function executed by individual keys depends on the software you are using.

1. Sound Mute: Pressing Fn + ESC in a windows environment turns sound on or off. Press Fn + Enter to simulate Enter or the enhanced keyboard's numeric keypad. 2. Instant security: Press Fn + F1 to blank the screen to prevent others from accessing your data. To restore the screen and original setting, press any key or press the Touch Pad. 3. Power save mode: Pressing Fn + F2 changes the power save mode. 4. Standby: When you press Fn + F3, the computer enters Standby. 5. Hibernation: When you press Fn + F4, the computer enters Hibernation. 6. Display selection: Press Fn + F5 to change the active display device. Hold down Fn and press F5 again to change the device. 7. Internal LCD screen Brightness: Pressing Fn + F6 decreases the display brightness in decrements. 8. Internal LCD screen Brightness: Pressing Fn + F7 increases the display brightness in increments. 9. Wireless setting: If your computer has both Bluetooth and Wireless LAN functions, you can press Fn + F8 to select which type of wireless communication you want to use. 10. Touch Pad: Pressing Fn + F9 in a windows environment enables or disables the Touch Pad function. 11. Press Fn + F10 or Fn + F11 to access the integrated keypad. When activated, the keys with gray markings on the bottom edge become numeric keypad keys (Fn + F11) or cursor control keys (Fn + F10). The power on default for both settings is off. Press Fn + F12 (ScrLock) to lock the cursor on a specific line. The power on default is off. 12. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility (reduce): To reduce the icon size on the desktop or the application window, press the 1 key while holding down the Fn key. (13. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility (enlarge): To enlarge the icon size on the desktop or the application window, press the 2 key while holding down the Fn key.

Where is the wireless switch located?

Try to examine your laptop keyboard.

  1. Look for a Function Key (F1 ... F12) with the wifi icon below it usually printed in orange or blue.
  2. Now press and hold the Fn key and press that function key with the wifi icon.
  3. That softly turns your wifi ON.

Keyboard `problem `strange `dash `appearing

Many programs extend the usefulness of the function keys by using key combinations. The most common combinations are Shift + a function key, Alt + a function key, and Crtl + a function key. These combinations can be very useful. For instance, in Microsoft Word, when any text is highlighted, pressing the Shift key plus the F3 key will change the case of the text from all caps, initial caps, to all lowercase. Shift + F7 will choose the Thesaurus command. These shortcuts allow you to access such functions with one keystroke rather than three or four mouse clicks.

I can't copy & paste properly i XP.

im guessing that an alternative function key is depressed or pressed, locate said key and depress or press it. that should resolve your problem. alternativley check your keyboard location settings, usa, uk, etc, this can make the difference as different locations have different shortcuts.

hope this helps
