Question about Colorado Memory Systems Colorado Jumbo250 250mb QIC SCSI External (Jumbo250), Condition Refurbished Tape Drive

1 Answer

JUmbo250 Hi Tried to clean the device the other day. Did something wrong and apparently damaged the transport mechanism. It is only possible to restore small backups. Get errors like "seek error" or the drive hangs, moving forward and backward indefinitely. I think the mechanics need a fix/repair. What to do? Yours honestly, Bob

Yes it needs repair, I suppose the tapes are fine them selfs so they should work fine in another one, you will have to service the tape drive, you can get another tape drive and the tapes should work.

well in my opinion, get another tape drive or take it to a tech to fix it. I can't imagine getting in there my self, most likely will need to replace a few parts.

Id really suggest to buy that 20 usd right above, the repair man would take more than that probably.

  • Ekse Jul 09, 2008

even if you want to repair it the parts will cost so it will come around or more the price of a new one (20usd on ebay) Just get the new one and your problems should be solved.

Let me know if you need anything else

    Thanks,

    Ekse

Backup using Tape LTO06 TS32000 IBM Library

Tapes do brake, at the end of the day they are mechanical devices.

Just throw it away and buy another one.
But it can be reformatted or checked using IBM utilities from the atape drivers in case you still want it (ITDT or tapeutil)

Problems with tape drives HP7980A HP-IB.reel stopping with message missload. reel moves and after obtaining BOT jump forward, but doesn't jump back to BOT and failed

Water is a great damaging factor for tape drives. I know you can disassemble the drive (almost) complete and clean everything you can see. Not only should all moving parts and rollers guiders be cleaned, but also the logic boards and the cables and connectors. You are not allowed to remove any of the rolling parts, because you wont be able to readjust them without calibration tools. Then it should be reassembled after cleaning. Also use a cleaning tape several times, to remove all residue of the cleaning fluid. There is special cleaning fluid for things with water damage, but the heads and guiding system can be cleaned with clean alcohol (no spiritus)

For what it is worth, I found an old manual of the drive. Because it does not have a normal URL I put the link in the text here:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/information_storage/software/ltt/2-wd11.pdf

Don't use any of the storage tapes, you have your data on, because you could damage the tapes. In the end, perhaps you have to buy another tape drive, to restore your data so save the tapes, till you are 100% sure the drive won't eat the tapes.

Possible bad or wrong media type. You must be using DLTtape VS1 cartridges for write capability.

You also need to visually inspect the drive to make sure the leader is attached to the buckling arm. The "leader" is the ~10 piece of reinforced tape that is permanently attached to the take-up reel in the drive. It threads around the rollers, past the head, and is held in place by the buckling arm and is visable by using a flashlight and looking into the drive from the front. The leader tip is in the shape of a rounded arrowhead and is what physically hooks to the media in your VS1 cartridge. If the leader isn't there you'll need to send the drive into Quantum for repair.

If this is the case, you likely have a damaged piece of media in your pool that you must find, as this tape will cause the same "damage" on your next drive, causing the drive to "swallow the leader". Quantum has a Media Inspection PDF file on their site...use it, as it will save you time and $$$ the moment you find a single piece of "bad media".

As a side note, most media makers offer a Limited Lifetime Warranty and will replace bad media at no cost (other than shipping) to you.

Parity error issue with TF85 DSSI based on VAX4000 - 700

If cleaning the heads using the cleaning tape did not help, then there are 3 possibilities that I know of:

1) The heads are sufficiently dirty to require direct cleaning with a more powerful solution.
2) The heads are defective.
3) The heads are out of alignment.

Parity errors are not usually controller problems. If the head alignment has drifted enough, you may be missing a track when recording. An initialization includes writing format information at the beginning of the tape. This is "re-read" during the process to confirm correct writing. This is the part that is failing.

Keep me posted.

Tape Ejects after little time

Yeah this isnt caused by the Tape I have had an issue way back with my tape driver as well and it was an internal mechanical malfunction, the gears that hold the tape in position push the tape internally on its gears and read / copy data but when it no longer is aligned with the gears it just keeps spinnning and eventually ejects automatically. Unfortunately I didnt open it up and fix but I was able to send it back to the Manufacturer and mine had 5 year warranty and they fixed it.Im new on here so if my solution helped you please give some good feedback on my answer thank you

well you can contact them and ask about it, maybe the would have a simple solution to it, or possibly repairs, don't know about the price but surely over the 20usd.

you could also try contacting the seller of the product if they would ship it overseas, I've ordered a few things from over there shipped over just fine to Finland.

DLT VS160

red LED blinkin suggests the drive is reporting some sort of internal error, if you can see no obvuios problem (something jammed in the mechanism, ect ect) take it to someone who can dismantle it and check for dry joints, jamming things like that
