Standby has always been a tricky feature in XP (in that it does not work properly about 50% of the time, especially on lap tops...). The good news is there is nothing particularly wrong with your computer however I understand your frustration. To immediately remedy the problem, simply hold down the computers on button until it shuts off and you should be able to start right back up again. However, again I understand this is not ideal. There are a few steps we can try to rectify this situation:

-First check the settings for your NIC or network interface card. If you have any special programs from the manufacturer for configuring it, please use it. Otherwise go to control panel, open up system and click on device manager.
-Go down to network adapters and use the arrow next to it to expand the options.
-Right click your adapter(s) and go to power management. Try playing with these settings as to whether the device can take the computer out of standby. Choose the opposite of what it's set to (checked or unchecked)

Usually the power settings on the NIC are the culprit behind the XP Standby dilemma however not always. If this does not solve the problem there is always the option to turn off Standby by again going to control panel, double clicking on power options and selecting change plan settings or advanced (sorry I don't have an XP machine in front of me.) and select for your standby to happen and select never from the drop down box or at least several hours so you're not restarting your machine every few minutes.

Be sure all of your components drivers and software are up to date by checking at the Dell and other respective manufacturers websites. I hope this solves your problem. Thank you.

First, how do you know it's in standby mode?
I would turn it off and disconnect from the power source. Then plug it back in and try to start it. If possible, start it in safe mode to see if you can identify what is happening. If in safe mode, do a system restore back a day or two.

Why is my dell windows xp home edition stuck on standby? The only thing that happens when i turn it on is the power button flashes orange

It doesn't sound like it's in standby mode, it sounds like it's not POSTing.

The PSU may be failing or already failed. Try disconnecting all nonessential hardware. The PSU may not be putting out enough power for the system to POST

Dell SE198WFP 19" LCD won't come out of standby

I went into the BIOS (with F2 during restart) and changed a value -- IIRC it was called something like "power management scheme" -- from the default S3 to the other choice, S1. Now the old Dell XP Dimension 2350 will go into and out of Standby correctly and the new SE198WFP 19" LCD will too.

Installed SH-S202 dvd writer some time ago, and since that time have experienced shut down problems on my Dell with XP pro. It never shuts down, but seems to go into Standby mode first. Then, when it...

Check the power settings:

START | Control panel | Power settings

Make sure all settings are Never

Also go to the Advanced tab and remove any Standby entries.

The DVD Writer installation is most likely a coincidence then an actual suspect with the standby issues.

Thanks,

Vincent

Standby Mode

Go to control panel then power options>power schemes and see if system standby is enabled, it may have changed if done some major updates. also turn off screen saver if on as this may bring it out of standby
