My Dyson DC14 had no suction...see if this works...turn the Dyson upside down...there is a length of hose that connects the bottom of the vacuum to the top, careful remove one end of the hose and check for debris...mine was clogged. Removed the clog and voila...it works. Thanks for the above info on checking the hose for cracks.

WAIT!!! Don't replace the entire clutch yet... I just had the same problem. Before buying a new clutch assembly, I took the out the clutch just to make sure I could do it (the link previously mentioned is great: http://www.dysonmedic.com/DC07%20Folder/DC07%20Clutch%20replacement.html). In the process, I also opened the clutch at the wide end (two screws and a little retaining clip on the side - can watch a video as to how to disassemble the clutch here: http://www.ezvacuum.com/dyson-dc04-dc07-and-dc14-belt-pack-for-clutch-system-90251401-2-pack-p-2196.html?currency=USD). In the "lid" you will see a little black plate (looks like the same material that a car breakpad is made out of). If the clutch is the problem this plate will look a little worn down. It can be removed and flipped over. You'll get a few more years out of it. Of course, when the second side wears out, you'll have to get a new clutch (but by then maybe the the entire vac will need replacing anyway). Enjoy.

When the vacuum cleaner starts making a really loud ratcheting noise on the carpet setting, unplug the vacuum, flip it over, look at the beater bar (there are three quarter turn screws at the bottom of the beater bar cover), and remove the balled up hair string, and other wonderful things. If the vacuum still makes the awful ratcheting sound, then it's time for a new clutch. This is the part. Replacing the clutch will solve the problem.---------
