I have MasterCook 9 but unable to open recipes from older MaserCook programs now stored on a disk which have .mc2 and .mcx extensions. Have tried ParetoLogic PC Health Advisor which does nothing but refer me to outdated websites.

Being the same program it should be able to open them ...but sometimes this is not a rule ...(same thing with word files from 2003 in 2007 program ) try to associate the files with the new program and see if it works and open them ..for example ..right click on one of the files and choose properties...after that click change and from the list pick the new program ...If it isnt in the list ..click browse and go to drive C /program files..choose the new program folder and inside click on the execution ...after you make this choice ..click apply ..and ok ..
If the files are visible in this new version it will open them and you will be able to read them ..if they are incompatible it will tell you so ..
In this case the only way to do it is to install the old version in parallel. To avoid conflict ..install the old version in a separate director folder..in another partition ...Just choose to change the director when you install ..and make a folder in the other partition ..name it after the program ..and choose it to install the program into ..when you are done ..make the same thing I already told you to do with this one ...click right on a file ..and properties than change and browse for the old version ..and choose its execution to open the old files..
This way they will work in parallel

By starting up "something" is asking permission to install mc2. What is the the meaning of this and what does this mc2 does to the functioning of my desktop?

Perhaps the install is trying to open a file with an mc2 file extension. Has this prompt at startup just started happening or has it always been happening? If it has just started did you recently download something? MC2 files are Misc Files primarily associated with Mastercook File (Sierra). There could be other programs which also use files with this file extension. It sounds like your system is trying to open a file with an mc2 file extension and does not have the proper program installed to do so. It is asking you whether you will allow it to install the file for you.

When I try to open a cookbook I get a dialog box saying Unable to create view: 'cbks'-'open'

I started receiving this same message today also. In addition, when I do a search by ingredient in the Search feature and try to open up the recipe I get the same message with the words 'Rcpe' - 'open' instead of the 'Cbks' - 'open'

They have a patch to fix it, thankfully. I just spent about a half an hour with my brain exploding because I was having the same problem you're having! You have to download the patch, unzip it into the 'program' folder of the MasterCook folder, then launch MasterCook. If you don't get the patch unzipped into the right place, it doesn't work. Thankfully, if you put it in the wrong spot (as I did) you can just drag and drop it into the 'program' folder.

If you have the install media (cd or dvd) uninstall it and try a fresh install.
You may get it working by using system restore to turn your pc back to when it last worked.

I have the cosmi 20,000 recipies perogram in my old computer and the hard drive went out. I got a new Acer with Windows 7 and cannot get the old disk to load. The former computer was running Windows XP...

i think u are probably out of luck. this software looks like it came from the late 90s and will work with anything up to xp, but vista & win7 are a whole different ballgame. best solution, buy an old laptop with win98 or 2000 or xp super cheap on ebay, or beg one from a friend, and use ur software on it there in the kitchen. that's what i do with my old laptop. works great if u have room in the kitchen lol

also transfer ur fave recipes from 20,000 recipes to a recipe organizer program like mastercook, it's much much better for searching plus u can enter 1000s of new recipes from anywhere. u can get older versions of mastercook for $5 on ebay. version 8 works just great for me with winxp. (WARNING if ur interested in mastercook on ur NEW computer, get version 11, the older ones DON'T work w/Vista or win7.)

I can't open mastercook version 3 on PC

Compatibility Wizard
1. Open the Program Compatibility Wizard by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Use an older program with this version of Windows.
2. Follow the instructions in the wizard.
If you cannot install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the wizard, browse to the program's setup file, usually called Setup.exe, Install.exe, or something similar. The wizard is not designed to work on programs that have an .msi file name extension.
To change compatibility settings manually for a program, right-click the icon for the program, click Properties, and then click the Compatibility tab.

Using MasterCook to print my own cookbook

Have you checked for a software patch update? If a patch does not fix the issue, you could print 1 category at a time, instead of the whole cookbook.

Wanting to upgrade old Mastercook program to meld to new computer

ValuSoft says that MasterCook 9.0 is only supported in Windows 98-XP. Specifically not Vista compatible. What's wrong with these people? I have Vista and didn't realize until tonight that some of MasterCook doesn't work right. So, buy XP.
