Your problem may be the construction of your room and the walls may be blocking the signal from bouncing around. Try to move your wireless unit to different parts of the room for a better signal.
If you click on VIEW WIRELESS NETWORKS and you have more than one signal being picked up by your notebook, you may be connecting to your neighbors systems and you may have a "channel" issue. In order to change the channel, you need to know what kind of router you have. If Linksys, 2wire, Netgear. Each have a different way of accessing the router for configuration.
First you need to know where your router is located. Click on START, RUN, type CMD followed by either the ENTER key or the RETURN key. In the black box, type IPCONFIG/ALL and look for default gateway.
In the above example, the default gateway is 10.10.0.1. Enter whatever number you have into the address bar of your browser.
In the above example, my router is a D-Link at address 10.10.0.1. Your's may vary depending on the brand. In any case you will need to log into your router, go to the wireless section of your screen and there you should be able to change the default channel. In Linksys, this would be under the WIRELESS section. Again, you need to know your router. When you do get in, try setting your channel to channel 3, 7, or 8.

Windows WiFi Fix,
Windows Zero Wireless Configuration is one of the best programs to run a WiFi in Windows XP or Vista. Most of the other software packages that come with the different adapters have been poor at best in keeping a connection through Windows. Here is the best guide to get you back up and connected.

Right click on My Computer
When a window pops up click on properties
Click on the Hardware tab
Click Device Manager
Click the [+] next to Network Adapters
Find your wireless card and right click on it.

Continue disabling the device.
Wait 30 seconds or so.
Right click on your wireless again and click Enable.
Exit the device manager.
Reconnect to your router.
You should now be able to connect to the internet.
Windows Vista:

The machine will connect up with non secured networks easily, such as Mc Donalds, Panera Bread, etc. For a secure network it requires you to set up your network while your netbook is connected and running. You have to reset your router and choose another password before the old WiFi software saw it. When I downloaded and used the newer software it connected up without a problem. Are you sure you downloaded and installed the newer software called RT2870.arm.cab
It takes a convoluted means of installing the software as you have to down load it to another machine and then transfer it to a thumb drive and then find the drive on your net book, copy the file to the desktop of the net book and then execute from there.

I have the same problem. The only way I could get it to work is to click on the wifi icon. Select the wireless information tab, select your connection. Right click on it and delete it. Then Add new and reinstall. Right now I have to do this every time I power down or 'Suspend' but it does work.
