Question about Washing Machines

Open Question

Hi I was given a Westinghouse Toploader LT959S, I have no manual and continually become frustrated with it. Washing does not complete cycle fully it drains and does not spin and bleeps away stating unable to spin. After fiddling with buttons turning on/off and advancing to rinse & spin cycle, it randomly decides to work or not. during last spin cycle it looks like bowl is trying to adjust itself to become balanced, although I know it is ( i don't overload & does this big or small washes). Messages state on machine unable to agitate, press start/pause button, it may correct itself? Please help.

SOURCE: spin cycle is off balance washing machine is

i dont believe it is the agitator per say. Assuming this problem has just started and doesnt have transportation bolts still attatched. Two conditions cause the imballance. 1)(if unit is a top loader) Check if all 4 shock absorber springs are well lubricated and not sticking. 2)A more involved problem which often happens, Underneath the washer, is the drive motor. on the motor, is a round pulley. this pulley needs to come off and strip further until you see a long spring. If it is not broken, clean it up using a solvent and a rag. reassemble and test. (if spring is defective, it will slip instead of grip on a spin cycle.

SOURCE: GE washing macine stops during the wash cycle

This is exactly what my machine was doing, as well. I fixed it by cleaning out the filter in front of the water pump.

Searching here, I found that you can remove the lower front panel (three screws along the bottom edge is all it takes) to get to the filter. With the panel removed, you'll see a round white plastic cover (about 3-4 inches diameter) that screws out. Get a bucket under the cover to catch the water that's in it (could be 2 quarts or more) and unscrew the cover.

The cover pulls out, revealing that is actually a screw-in plastic strainer. I found tons of coins, broken pens, paper clips, etc. in mine when I did this. A lot will be deep inside the black rubber hose that connects this filter housing to the washer drum. You can rake the stuff out with a bent wire clothes hanger. Shaking the black hose will help hurry the junk along and out of your machine. Screw the cover back on after the clean out and your machine should go back to normal.

Thinking about it, front loaders will have lots of small items flushed into the pump compared to top loaders. Coins you alway found in the bottom of the drum in a top loader, they all wind up in the filter of a front loader. And once it slow the drainage to a crawl the machine will shut down multiple times when it can't drain the water out completely, and it will never step up to it's max spin speed with all that water still in the drum.

SOURCE: Bosch classixx 1000 washing machine - stops on spin

Washing machine stops at the spin cycle - light flashes. Have to drain water out manually. Happened last week and was then able to run an empty rinse cycle. Machine worked normally for another week. Same problem today but have had to drain water manually from the drum after trying an empty 90 wash and rinse cycle (both stopped on the Spin and flashed). Any ideas? Thanks. x

Hi, Yes, it could well be the power board. I would not hit it anymore you could do more damage to it, or get a shock.
If you are a technision and know a bit unplug and take apart.
check all componants on board. Look for burns marks and cracks on board solder if nessecary. Good luck.

Hi, Paulette well, I think that this sounds like your Load Sensor or Water Level sensor, is faulting? I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but this is a job for a professional.
To achieve the cheapest repair with the least amount of time and headache, please contact Westinghouse either a local, or even the head office, and ask for a referral on to an authorised service and repair center. Now when you make contact with them, first ask them to call and give a "Quote" as to the cost and type of repairs that need to be made. Then you can make an informed decision as to what to do, repair or replace. Now, I say this as often a repair can quickly escalate in costs, and a seemingly small problem, can end up being very expensive, often my customers tell me they then would prefer to put any monies, that would have been spent on the repair, be put towards a NEW unit, complete with a full warranty.
