Good thing that a sound came out of your speakers!
Are you saying you tested the sound with music, ect?
If you did but just that sound came, then you now need to search for some volume control.
You said earlier that you do not have the little speaker icon on the right of the taskbar. try clicking on the little arrow (<) to the left of most of the icons. now look on the extended view of all the icons there. If there is the icon, double-click on it and a small menu should pup up above the icon. Check to see if the even smaller speaker above the link "mixer" shows that sound is currently on. if this has a red cross over it, click the button. You now should be un-muted. I'm not entirely sure what is wrong if your sound doesn't work after this or if you could not find the icon.
Good luck!

Sound is on mute before entering ops. how to unmute

A) The hotkey is not Fn. That is the Function key. Press Fn and F8 hotkey at same time to decrease volume. Press Fn and F7 at same time to Mute volume.

B) Is 'ops' your system tray volume, or Device Manager? I suspect Device Manager.

C) Don't count on Windblows to upgrade your driver; or roll over driver; or play dead. (!O_O!)
DO count on Windoze to lose the address to the driver, though.

Suggest going to Asus Support, and download the Audio driver.

In the small window that comes up on the right, (Opening Audio_XP_xxxxxx), make sure there is a Green dot, in the small circle to the left of Save File.

If there isn't; left-click in the small circle to the left of Save File.

Then when fully downloaded in the small download window to the left; DOUBLE-click right on the file name.

In the next small window go to the far left, and click on
Extract all files.
At the bottom of the next 3 small windows click on Next, Next, and Finish.

Restart your computer if not asked to do so.
(Close all windows, go back to your desktop screen. Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart)

The speaker test works on realtek speakers but otherwise no sound can be heard (even when un-muted)

- Click on the "Start" button
- Click on "Control Panel"
- With the Control Panel in "Control Panel Home" view please click on "Hardware and Sound"
- Where it says "Sound" in green letters there are three options below that are in blue click on "Manage Audio Devices"
- This will bring up a window labeled "Sound"
- On the "Playback" tab there is listed the sound options available to you. One should read "Speakers HD Audio Device" Click on that.
- There should now be a check mark on that option.
- The Sound should then play through your Speakers

Laptop speakers not working!!!

If you are using Windows Vista.
Step 1: Click on Start then type Sound and select sound from the list.
Step 2: Under Playback Tab please select Speakers and Dual Headphones and click on Set Default.
Step 3: Then click on Apply then sound from your notebook should work.

If these steps do not work then the best option is to re-install the sound driver'.

No sound

You might have already tried this, but:
1) press the "start" or windows logo button at the bottom-left hand corner of the screen.
2) press "control panel" on the right side of the menu.
3) press the "sound" button (thumb-nails should be alphabetically ordered.)
you should be on the tab "playback". if so, check if you are currently using "realtek high-defenition audio". there should be a little green check-mark.
once you have that done, check to see if the "fn + arrow key(s)" button(s) work. if not, then you must have a speaker problem.

the last laptop i had had speakers that worked great, but they just stopped working one day all of the sudden...
so i just used the headphones port to plug in some speakers and that worked just fine.
try external speakers if you can not solve this soon.

best wishes,
Piggers
