Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a 12-year-old TPX24BP refrigerator, and one of the plastic water tubes became brittle and cracked right at the connector in back, so I need to replace it. The tube that cracked is the one that leads toward the front of the unit from the blue plastic connector that is accessible after removing the rectangular cardboard protector from the lower left side of the back of the unit. (Note: there are three plastic tubes that originate at about the same place. The other two lead up the back of the unit. They show no signs of embrittlement.) How do I proceed in order to replace the bad tube? How do I take off the side panels, or whatever, in order to access the path of the tube? Also, what quality of tube do I need? Nylon or polyethylene or what? I don't want this problem to recur. Thanks, Tom Lemberger

    Rich Roth,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the diagram accessed through your link shows lots of parts but none of the plastic tubes that carry water throughout the unit.

Referring to the "unit parts" diagram, the tube that needs to be replaced is connected to part 798 by using piece 807. It goes down to the bottom of the unit, then runs toward the front of the unit. I have no way of knowing how far forward it goes, or what it connects to at its far end.

Can you provide any information on the water tubes?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Thanks. While you're looking for a better diagram, I thought I'd mention that there are three plastic tubes running from the bottom of the unit to the top on the outside back of the unit, where I have easy access to them. Two go up to where the water filter is (upper right hand side of refrigeration side), and one goes up to where the ice maker is (the freezer side of unit). If these tubes account for the water dispenser and ice maker, as seems natural, then what the heck is the tube that broke doing?

That tube is either running to the water dispenser, or the ice maker. I am looking for a better diagram for you and possibly the parts list.

What causes leak between filter and filter housing on kenmore elite model 40141003010.

Hello Emile;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

I assume your changed the below component:

25693704-zbtre13rzitqz5mqvrpod1im-1-0.jpg At the ends of the plastic tubing are plastic push pull connectors. If the tubing is not properly seated and locked into the connector you will have a leak.
You may also have a crack in the connecting tubing from the water tank.
When you use your water dispenser, the water dispenser solenoid valve allows 65 PSI water pressure into the plastic tubing line, where if you have a bad connector or a crack in the line will cause a leak.
The is a plastic cap on the top of the above component.
1.) Put your fingers behind the above component where the tubing goes into the plastic mounting head. More often than not you can get bad parts
2.) Have someone push the water dispenser lever. Observe if water is running down the plastic tubing or if your fingers are getting wet.

Water spews out of the tube in back of ref while water is being dispensed from front

It sound like the plastic tube is cracked at the valve. After a while the tubing gets brittle and cracks. This is usually easily fixed by getting a quick connect plastic tubing couple and some tubing in the size of the tubing that cracked.

Water is leaking from the bottom of refrigerator

Have you checked the plastic tubing from the water valve. In an older refrigerator these get brittle and crack. The water could also be coming from the freezer interior and dripping out the door.

Leaking water in back refrigerator wall

You have to pull the refrigerator out and track down the leak. Leaks are usually really obvious. Usually it will be leaking from a tubing connector, or possibly a crack in the tubing itself.
Disconnect them by pressing the plastic ring (like a collar around the tube) into the connector, then simultaneously pull the tube out. (be sure to turn off the water supply first!)
Sometimes you may be able to fix a connector issue by cleaning it out and putting it back together, but you may need to replace it.
If you have a burst tube just replace the whole piece. No amount of duct tape will fix it.

Maytag fridge no water to icemaker any suggestions

Pour about 2/3 cup of water into ice maker . If it freezes and dumps , replace the water valve . If it does not dump , replace the icemaker . Also make sure the coils are clean beneath refrig , and the clear fill tube , which fills the icemaker , is clear of ice (not frozen up ).

I had the same problem, I found that the plastic tubing feeding the water despendor and icemaker was run right along the comperssor, over tiem the from exposure to the heat the tubing had become brittle and cracked.  the black tube shiled had to slid up to expose the cracked tube. A  new tub installed and splice to existing dispensor feed line fixed probelm.
