A lot of printer cartridges have a built in chip that the printer reads. If you are not using the printers brand name refills, this will sometimes lead to the cartridge not being recognized by the printer.
Additionally, some printers when they have become worn ( seen a lot of use ) have also been known to not recognize the refill cartrige after instalation. The second problem cause, although not a popular solution, can only be fixed by purchasing a new printer.
