I don't see my folders on my external hard disk. When I scan the disk for viruses I can see my folders while they are scanned. When I add new folders to it they don't disappear.

Hi,
It is due to virus activity. Some virus make the contents of the drive hidden, that is why user can't see the files. This can be fixed and data would be available to you. However, there are number of steps involved.
It is suggested that go to FOLDER OPTIONS - and select 'SHOW HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS' and uncheck/ Deselect 'HIDE PROTECTED SYSTEM FILES'.
creativetech_53.jpg
It would show the hidden files/ folders, if the system not infected Otherwise, from the clean/ virus free system you can see your data and copy all the required files/data. Select the required files and right-click and change the properties of the file by un-checking the hidden attribute. Please note that you can not change the properties (hidden attribute of the files) if the files are marked as system files. To change the attribute of such folders you can download and use iReset.
Dolwnload iReset and drag and drop the files/ folders on to its window to fix.

Also, make sure that you have a good antivirus installed and its updated. Scan your system and clean it. As long the the virus is there on you PC, you cannot get it fixed. However, if new folders don't disappear, it is likely that you would be able to fix the issue.

Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

It sounds like you have a virus on your machine, apart from not being able to view hidden files and folders is there anything else thats going wrong with the PC at all?
for example on start-up do you get any strange error messages or has the recycle bin name been changed?

I couldn't view the hidden files when i apply show hidden files in my folder options in tools menu in menu bar.

Folder Options is removed from Tools in Windows by a virus. The virus is called W32.Rontokbro@mm OR W32/Rontokbro.gen@MM

The removal of this virus is slightly difficult. Antivirus can't remove it automatically. However detailed procedure to remove it is available at

http://coolexp.blogspot.com/2008/01/fold...

About this Virus/Worm:
What it does is creating new files which looked like a folder but its actually a .exe file. Unless you’ve enabled the view extensions in the folder options or else you won’t see the .exe extension of the file. The file is approximately 43.7Kb and normally people will click to open it because it looked like a folder. So after you’ve open it, the virus will run each time during startup and keep on spreading and spreading… into the harddrives.

More troubles coming up. Normally when you click “Tools” in explorer, there’s a “folder options” underneath it. Once the pc is infected with the virus, the Folder Options will be missing, which disabled you to change the options to view the extension of the files. So when you see a new folder appeared from nowhere and you clicked to open it out of curiousity, the virus spread more again. Moreover, the virus disabled the registry edit where you will see this message “Registry edit is disabled by the administrator” everytime you try to edit the registry.

So how to clean the virus then? I found some solution from the following link and have successfully cleaned it from my system.

It will help you to get rid of this virus named W32.Rontokbro@mm aka brontok.a and to get back your hidden files. Source(s): http://coolexp.blogspot.com/2008/01/fold...

About folder option

Click on Start - Run and then type:
Regedit
then go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\NOHIDDE N.
There should be two registry entries there:

- CheckedValue : Type: DWORD Value: 2
- DefaultValue : Type: DWORD Value: 2

(Correct them if necessary.)

Now open the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL .

- CheckedValue : Type: DWORD Value: 1
- DefaultValue : Type: DWORD Value: 2

(Correct them if necessary.)

If the problem persists, open Start, Run, type "regsvr32 /i shell32.dll" and
click OK.
reboot the computer.
thats it, have fun :)

Unable to activate show hidden folders

Hi,

Based on your description, the OS is infected with a virus. The virus controls this so as to prevent you from seeing "unknown", "unfamiliar" files/folders and thus itself. Th easiest is to run your antivirus and an online scanner, clean/delete said viruses from your system and their support files. Some other indicators are, Task Manager will not show, "msconfig" will run but auto close as well as what you posted, Folder Options will not engage.

Additionally, you could try to:
  • download, install and run RRT.exe to force the registry into removing these restrictions;
  • download, install and run AdAware.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
