Question about Rheem 50 GAL ELEC TALL Water Heater 6YR SC 82V522

1 Answer

Re: Rheem Water Heater Model# 82V52-2 (date of Mfg 07/2007) A few months after an installer replaced our old water heater, we had an event one day where there was no hot water. The installer advised how to remove the top plate and hit the reset button to have the heater begin working again. Over the following months, we had the same problem on a sporadic basis. There were periods of months and/or weeks before the problem would happen again. It would not matter the time of the year or whether it was during the day or night. Recently, the events with no hot water have become more frequent (Usually, during shower time in the morning) Appreciate any comments if there is a solution. Thank You

There is a solution.
Ordinary tank-type electric water heaters are fully repairable by homeowner.

You have a new heater that works fine most of the time, but reset button trips.
That says tank is getting correct electricity.
It says that elements are good.
And you don't have sediment problem with new tank.

If you do not want to test parts, then replace upper and lower thermostats for $28.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html
The reason I suspect defective thermostat is that tank has 4 parts: 2 elements and 2 thermostats, and you have plenty of hot water so elements are probably good.
The reason I replace both thermostats is to avoid uncertainty.
Tighten screws very tight against copper wire.
Be sure to put back insulation and covers on water heater so thermostats not exposed to cool air which can lead to overheated water.
Then send bill for $28, plus labor and aggravation to Rheem
Your plumber should have done this for you as part of warranty, but sometimes self-sufficiency is valuable.

If you want to test water heater parts before replacing anything, then buy multimeter and take 30 minutes to become electric water heater expert:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html
Buy cheap multimeter at home center.
When testing continuity or testing elements, rotate multimeter dial to Ohms.
When testing for voltage,, rotate multimeter dial to 240-250-277 VAC

You can also double check anything fixya or plumber tells you by posting question on professional water heater forum like the Tank:

If the water heater is electric; BE SURE AND TURN OFF THE CIRCUIT BREAKER TO THE WATER HEATER, DOUBLE CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT THE WATER HEATER WITH A MULTIMETER BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE!

Here's a good video on how to test the heating elements.

To check the reset button.

To check the thermostat.

I have Rheem Pvw50, 50 gallon water heater installed at home. For the past few days, there is a noise coming out of blower motor. What could be the reason?

Your water heat is at an age that I would recommend replacing the whole unit. That one cannot be too efficient and most likely has sediment built up on the bottom of it pretty bad.

My Jacuzzi J-N180F tankless water heater will not even light.

Access your product manual.
I cannot find a product manual.
Some major company, like Rheem, makes this computer that heats water.

Call service technician to repair the unit.
Copy following link for overview of type of problems found with tankless computers.
For example tankless computers require continual maintenance on yearly and monthly basis to prolong expected life of product.

If tankless computer is older than 5 years, then assume it is like your 5-year old laptop computer.

Save problems, and repair the unit yourself, same day, by installing tank-type water heater:

Cannot light pilot on 4 year old heater rheem tells me part not available in supply house is this right part i need isvile that is broken below pilot light

I can't tell if you have tankless or tank heater.
Rheem has gone big into tankless the last few years and maybe first models don't have parts any more.

Even so, Rheen probably sells the whole burner assembly.
Most plumbers prefer to replace whole assembly so they're not doing a call-back next month.
Check with Rheem for whole assembly.

Another option is to roll the Rheem heater out of the way and install generic brand from Ace, Home Depot, Sears, or Lowes. Read manual cover to cover to prevent failure. Keep dust, lint and chemicals out of same room. Loosen anode rod before installing. Connect ground wire jumper to hot and cold pipes.
http://waterheatertimer.org/9-ways-to-save-with-water-heater.html
Fix the Rheem when parts become available, or use it as tempering tank to passively preheat incoming cold water, or set tank in wood box with glass cover and make passive solar tank.

Pvs50- will not ignite the gas

Some of these units can not be reset and you have to replace the water heater. You will need to contact Rheem with your model number to find out what you can do for your unit. Here is the information you will need when you call them. They have an 800 number available for you.

1. Should you have any questions about your new water heater, or if it requires
adjustment, repair, or routine maintenance, it is suggested that you first contact
your installer, plumbing contractor or previously agreed upon service agency. In
the event the firm has moved, or is unavailable, refer to the telephone directory,
commercial listings or local utility for qualified service assistance.
2. Should your problem not be solved to your complete satisfaction, you should
then contact the Manufacturer’s National Service Department at the following
address:
2600 Gunter Park Drive East
Montgomery, Alabama 36109-1413
Phone: 1-800-432-8373.
When contacting the manufacturer, the following information will be requested:
a. Model and serial number of the water heater as shown on the rating plate attached
to the jacket of the heater.
b. Address where the water heater is located and physical location.
c. Name and address of installer and any service agency who performed service on
the water heater.
d. Date of original installation and dates any service work was performed.
e. Details of the problems as you can best describe them.
f. List of people, with dates, who have been contacted regarding your problem.
