Question about Cenega UFO : Afterlight for Windows

2 Answers

Hi, I’m trying to run UFO afterlight on a Sony VIAO laptop running Windows Vista Business (sp2) I’ve tried running in compatibility modes for XP and 2000, neither with any luck – and tried running it in windowed mode. With all of these, I get the following error message about a failed function: ver: UFO: Afterlight v1.7 file:.\core\BasicOglWnd.cpp line:207 wglChoosePixelFormatARB() failed! I’ve tried a number of possible solutions, including the latest patch, none with any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried the forums on their site, but they are down and tried googling also, with no luck. Thanks

    Hi,

yes, I've checked all of the specs, and checked the website of the product. I've installed the latest patch as requested and performed all of the suggested solutions within the FAQ section and troubleshooting sections. I'm reasonably adept at computer installations, hardware, drivers and the like, so I've done all the "normal" things.

This was not purchased at a store. I have emailed the support company, but I do not believe they are trading any more. What I need is a specific solution to this particular issue. Do you think you might be able to help?

    Thanks a lot

Hi. I have the trilogy, so I have the version you are linking me to also. It has the same problem. It's not an installation problem. It's a problem with a function that checks the pixel ratio and sizing when starting the game. The installation is fine.

If you go to the official website, you will see the patch that I've downloaded and installed is designed to work with vista -http://www.ufo-afterlight.com/pages/supp...

The problem I have is also mentioned on this site by another user, so it's not just me. I just need to know what I can do to solve this. If you can't help, no worries - thanks for trying.

    Hi there,

After much frustration trying to download the drivers from intel themselves, I downloaded the latest vaio updates, which should contain the latest drivers. I checked via device manager for the latest drivers also, but that came back with nothing. So I'm assuming they're up to date.

I've got a Sony Vaio vgn-bz12en, which a quick google check returned that my graphics card is Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

As mentioned, I've tried downloading Sony Vaio's latest updates, which didn't help. I did try downloading directly from intel, but their scanning tool said that Sony Vaio has a custom driver for their laptops. If you think it helps, I can try and download that (if you have a direct link that would be great as I found the intel site quick cumbersome)

Sorry to make this such as complex problem. Its massively frustrating for me too :(

    Thanks a lot

Damn. I'd already installed those, and alas, the problem persists. Argh :( if you have any other ideas, it would be great to hear them. If not, I'm more than happy to "accept" as you've been incredibly helpful and a credit to the service.

    Thanks either way

Hi, the run-time error you are getting is associated with the particular graphics processing instruction set by the software and the operating system. From what I can see you are getting the error because your graphics card does not support a particular feature of the game or there is an error within the graphics card drivers themselves. Do you know what sort of graphics card is in your laptop? Have you tried upgrading the drivers for the graphics? If so let me know and I will be able to confirm whether this is the problem. Looking at it I am pretty sure that's what the problem is.

Hi, thanks for that information. The intel graphics chips can be an absolute nightmare and I am inclined to think that this is the root of the problem, it just is not good enough for the software. However give it a try with the new intel drivers if you manage to download them and see how you get on.

As for a website for drivers, I went straight to Sony's website. Try this link for driver files that may help -

    http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/va...

    Hope this helps

The only other thing I could suggest is to install the latest version of direct x which you probably already have installed although I think it is a graphics card problem rather than a direct x problem. If that does not help then I am pretty sure this is going to be software that is not compatible with your graphics card.

You are very welcome for my help, I hope you do manage to get it going!

    Thanks very much

First of all, you have to ensure that your system meets the minimum system requirements. In terms of RAM capacity, Processor speed, Video and grapic card.
If all these is correct and yet it refuses to run, then you can visit the website for trouble shooting the game or you can go through the troubleshooting guide that comes with the game to see if there is anything about your problem there.
Although, it is advised that you call a game store or dealer or better still, you can call the customer care or send them and email explaining your problem to them.
They should be able to point out where there is an error to you.
Hope this solution was useful to you? Please feel free to comment for more information and thank you for using the fixya website.

From what i see in your post, there is a problem that comes right from the installation(probably a missing and vital installation file) and as a result the installation is not good enough to run the game. The missing file has to do with one of the file that were used for the game programming.
Also, the game has been designed to work with only windows 98, 2000. ME. and Xp. So it is not compatible with the recent programming languages for later windows version.
I'm sorry there is no way to fix this unless you can get a fresh copy of the game from a game store around you or from a friend.
Below is a link where you can buy the other version of the game. (UFO aftershock)

hope this helped you? please comment

Photo explotion will not open after i use it one time. i have to uninstall and reinstall it to use it,it worked fine with windows vista but i now have windows 7

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. Have you tried running the software in Compatibility Mode? Depending on your version of Windows 7, you may have the ability to run it in Compatibility Mode. Try right-clicking on the Photo Explosion shortcut that is on your Desktop. Then, go to Properties from the pop-up menu. Then, select the Compatibility tab. On that tab, put a check next to "Run the program in compatibility mode for:". Then, select Windows XP SP2. Click on the OK button to save this setting. Finally, try launching the program again.

Thanks for using Fixya.

You can try installing it in "Compatability Mode" for XP SP2 and Run As Administrator.
Windows Vista or Windows 7, has problems running some older versions of applications, just because so much has changed under the hood from Windows XP days.
To configure the compatibility mode for an application, just locate the installation directory and right click on the .exe, selecting Properties from the menu.
Select the Compatibility tab: Set it for "XP SP2"
You can actually hoose to run the program in Windows XP compatibility mode, or even all the way back to Windows 95 compatibility.
Probably the most useful setting to start off with would be to disable the visual themes and desktop composition, if you can’t get things working. If you are trying to run a video game, you will often need to choose “Run this program as an administrator”. You’ll have to play around with it, but most likely you can get your application working this way.

I am using VISTA and the application shuts down when I try to use

Vista doesn't support all applications fully yet.. The only thing i can advice you to do is installing all the programs you want to install as Administrator.. Like so:
2407c4b.png

And if the programs still after installation doesn't work properly you can try to run them in Windows XP SP2 compability mode, like so: 4fc2f68.gif

My game is loaded but when i click on the icon. it will not play?

Ok, from what I read on Microsoft, this software is NOT compatible with Windows Vista 32-bit or 64-bit. That was found directly from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/Details.aspx?type=Software&p=School%20Tycoon&v=Take-Two%20Interactive&uid=&pf=0&pi=5&c=PC%20Gaming&sc=Strategy&os=32-bit

However, checking the company's website, it mentions that some games that normally won't run in Windows Vista, can be ran in a "compatibility mode" which mimics Windows XP. Follow these steps and see if this corrects the problem:
  1. Right-click the shortcut for the game.
  2. Click the compatibility tab.
  3. Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode".
  4. Select Windows XP SP2 (or Windows 98 if XP does not work) from the drop down menu.
  5. Click Apply
  6. Click OK
  7. Start the game
It should run in Windows XP SP2. If it doesn't you can try Windows 98 to be sure. If neither of these work, unfortunately, you may be unable to play this game.

32 bit program to 64 bit opperating system

From the Autocad webiste:
System Requirements AutoCAD® Civil and AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2009 Recommended System Requirements Recommended configuration (excluding server components used with project management capabilities):
  • Intel® Pentium® 4 (3 GHz or higher); AMD Athlon™; multiple processors supported, dual-core supported
  • 32-bit only: Microsoft® Windows Vista® Ultimate/Business/Enterprise, Microsoft® Windows XP (SP2)
Note: Windows XP 64 and Windows Vista 64 are supported in 32-bit compatibility mode only.

Here's how you should be able to run it in compatibility mode:
1. Right click on the Autocad Icon in your start menu
2. click on Properties
3. click on the Compatibility tab at the top
4. check the box next to Compatibility Mode and select Vista 32 bit if it is given as an option.

I don't have Vista here, but that is how it works in XP and I did do a search and it appears to be the same in Vista.
