You realize that the performance would be horribly slow unless you're using ESATA, right?

The computer keeps freezing and telling me that hard drive failure is imminent. Do you know of any solutions?

Enter the BIOS and set the first boot drive as USB if that is what you require. If you set the C drive as second boot then if you remove the USB then it will boot from C as normal, that way you can have multiple OS with no conflicts.
Hope that helps.

Have you considered maybe .. replacing the hard drive that is about to fail?

  • specialistel Jan 05, 2011

Replacing the hard drive possition is of course the best option and can aid housekeeping as if you were to format a fresh drive, place your OS on it from your OS discs or Rescue discs, you can move only the files you use to the new drive from the old drive and then format the old drive making a safe partition on the remaining good portion of the drive as a possible test drive.

Personally though, they make fairly inexpensive bird scarers when you hang the shiny discs up on string over your freshly seeded garden or a good door stop!

Your system memory may not be adequate and you may have to upgrade, you may also want to check how much space you have on your primary hard drive. This can be cured by purchasing a second hard drive, (internal/external), then configure your pc so that any additional programs/documents are stored on the secondary hard drive with the exception of the system files required to be located on the primary drive or re-install your additonal programs/documents to the secondary hard drive. This will significantly improve your PC's performance. Finally some system drivers may be out-dated and may need to be upgraded.

Siig sc-sat212-s4, stops boot when connected

While most computers are capable of starting up properly with external drives connected, from time to time the external drive can cause confusion during the startup process. The computer may attempt to boot from the external hard drive rather than the primary internal drive. This causes the computer to fail during startup because the external hard drive does not have the operating system installed on it.

Disconnect the external hard drive from the computer. In order to minimize the risk of damage to or loss of files on the external drive, shut down the computer if possible, or hold down the power button on the computer until the computer turns off and then disconnect the external hard drive. Restart the computer with the drive disconnected. If the computer still does not start up, it is possible that the computer is attempting to boot from the external drive. Reconnect the external drive and restart the computer. Watch the screen as the computer boots up. A prompt will appear indicating which key to press to enter "Setup" or the "BIOS." Press this key when the prompt appears. On many computers the key is either Delete ,F2 or F10. Use the keyboard of the computer to navigate the "Setup menu" that appears. (Advanced Bios Features.) The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP:
The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:

IDE-0 means Pri master ?
IDE-1 means Pri slave ?

IDE-2 means Sec master ?
IDE-3 means Sec slave ? or using the arrow keys you can load failsafe or optimized defaults this will set the boot order. Highlight the option for "Boot Disk" or "Startup disk" and select the "C:/" or the primary internal hard drive. Press the associated key, labeled so on the bottom of the screen, to save the changes and restart the computer. This will allow the computer to boot from the appropriate drive. Hope it helps.

Had a external hd pluged in and had shut the laptop up and later when I upened it back up to use it, it would not boot and said it had no bootable disk

remove the external hd before turning bakc the system on, it might be trying to boot up to the ext hard drive if the internal hard drive is not the primary boot device on your computer. go to the BIOS set up of your system then change the boot sequence make hdd as the primary boot device so you can use the ext hard drive even if after reboot.

Maxtor Internal EIDE hard drive dip switch settings.

I assume you have two IDE controllers? IDE1 and IDE2, I'll try to help, the primary HD needs to have the pin set to primary and the secondary set to slave, if you're running both of these drives off of the same ribbon cable. You may have to go into your BIOS settings and check to make sure the Primary HD is the WD drive.

Blue screen of death

The primary can be an external drive, but you must modify the boot order in the BIOS to do it. I would highly suggest not doing this though, because you will take a huge performance hit and have to deal with obvious aesthecial problems. Some operating systems will also not allow you to do so.

Toshiba Hard Drive Crash

Hi,
if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.

Drivers are not needed for this Ext HDD.
If you go to your Computer Management>Storage Devices, you will have to assign a Drive letter for it to show in your "My Computer" as a External Hard Drive.
Also ensure that drive is set as "slave" and do not connect until computer is booted to Desktop.
All changes will take effect after reboot.
