I had the same problem, so i took all of the batteries out (including the back-up battery) and then i hit the on button a few times. i then proceeded to reinstall all of the batteries, AAA first, and then the back-up battery after the calculator was already on. it works great now.

Me too! It's been working fine for half a decade. Perhaps it's getting old?

Ti 84 plus screen faded away

If you cannot see anything on the screen, you may need to adjust the graphing TI 84 calculator contrast :

1. To darken the screen, press and release 2nd key, and then press and hold up-arrow key until the display is sufficiently dark.

2. To lighten the screen, press and release 2nd key, and then press and hold Down-arrow key until the display is sufficiently light.

There are three possible solutions here. From what you are describing to me, you say the screen displays a couple of random numbers and letters, including a solid vertical line in the upper right corner, are scattered across the screen? Sounds like you are still in graphing mode. There is nothing wrong with your batteries and changing them won't help because I already know that you didn't change the CR Lithium Battery. This is the "memory card" for the TI-83 Plus. If you don't change that, when you insert new AAA batteries in the calculator, the memory has not been deleted. You probably don't remember, but the calculator remembers the last problem that you did, which was a graphing calculation. Try pressing the "Graph" button and the calculator will go back to function mode. If this doesn't work, try resetting all the memory.
  1. Remove a battery from the battery bay.
  2. Press and hold the CLEAR button while re-installing the battery.
  3. While still pressing the CLEAR key, press and hold down the ON button. If the home screen displays, release the keys.
  4. If the home screen is displayed, press 2nd MEMto display the memory menu.
  5. Select 7:Reset to display the "RAM ARCHIVE ALL" menu.
  6. Press the right arrow twice to display the "ALL" menu.
  7. Select 1:All Memory to display the "RESET MEMORY" menu.
  8. To proceed with the reset, select 2:Reset. The message "MEM cleared" is displayed on the home screen.
If this doesn't work, try changing the CR Lithium Battery. It is located in the battery bay at the top with the cross-head screw in it (It says BACK-UP BATTERY). It tells you what type of battery it takes and how to insert them in. I hope these possible solutions help. If all of them don't, then the only other thing I can think of is that it has some internal part alignment issues or a cold soldering iron blob, on the inside of the calculator. I saw one time on the Internet that cold soldering irons can sometimes make electronics not work properly.

My screen has a horizontal line across the screen

Make the calculator perform a self test: Part of the test is the display of some line patterns. You will be able to see if something is wrong with the screen.

TO PERFORM A SELF TEST (No I am not shouting, but I cannot use Bold fonts nor underlined)
  1. Turn calculator ON
  2. Press and HOLD the ON key
  3. Press the "E" key , the key with an E to its right
  4. Release the ON key
  5. Tests will be performed cyclically until you execute a SYSTEM HALT
TO PERFORM A SYSTEM HALT
  1. Press and HOLD the ON key
  2. Press the and release the "C" key key with a "C" to its right.
  3. Release the ON key
  4. You should see the empty stack.
If you need to repair it, google FixThatCalc.
Good luck.

Hello,
Hope is what keeps the world turning.
Clean the electrical terminals even if they seem shiny. Use a clean eraser tip of a pencil.

Insert the main batteries.
If you see the line again, press [CLEAR] to see if it disappears.
Try resetting the RAM by pressing [2nd][MEM][7:Reset][1:All Ram][2:Reset] [ENTER][ENTER].

If screen is too light or too dark, adjust the contrast:
Press [2nd] key and release it
Press and HOLD Arrow (UP to darken, or DOWN to lighten) the screen.

If that does not solve the problem you may have to force the calculator to boot up. Details are in the article . Read the part on Ti83Plus family.
The article contains links to additional articles.
Hope it helps.

Reinstalling the OS fot the TI84Plus

Howdo I correct the Error Waiting...Please Install Calculator SoftwareNowmessage on my TI-83 Plus family or TI-84 Plus family calculator?

If an operating system (OS) update fails or is interrupted, the calculator will be in an inoperable state with the message Waiting...Please install calculator software now.Themost common cause of a transfer being interrupted is updatingthe operating system on a calculator with low batteries. Users will needtouse the TI Connectivity cable and the TI Connect to sendthe operating system to the calculator. Make sure to have thelatest version of TI Connect installed on the computer.
In order to install the software please follow these steps:
1. Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the computer and the calculator.
2. Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader
3. Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS.
If themessage "Error! Press any key to turn unit off. Then turn unit back on."appears on the graphing calculator, quickly, remove one battery from thecalculator and reinstall it while the transfer is taking place.

Blank lines across the screen of a TI-86 graphing calculator

Try this, hook up new battery and go to MODE and darken and lighten the screen.. do it ten to fifteen times. if that doesn't help, try hook up most left and most right's battery terminal to a DC supply at 4.5V. dont go above 4.5 it will fry your calc (it is design to handle 3V). now you are forcing extra juice into the dead LCD screen lines... and reapeat the MODE + darken trick. I fixed mine like that! Works! and remeber to leave it completely black(darkest) for a while to keep that dead line alive!

e0df163.jpg does it look something like the example I gave? Anyways, I don't think that it can be fixed. and you can either:
A.) have the screen fixed (approx. $100)
B.) buy a new calculator (approx. $85)
( the monetary figures are approxamate and should not be taken literally, the $85 is at least what I last saw one for @ a Wal-Mart)

Horizontal lines obstructing the second half of the ti 83 calculator screen, anyone know repair tips?

I had the same prob with vertical lines on the screen, and getting messed up when there was lots of numbers on the screen.

Solution: Change your batteries. Put some freshies in then adjust your contrast until you see the little black box. If you still have a problem with the lines, darken the screen until it's black (2nd up repeatedly) and let it sit for a couple minutes. Lighten your screen back to normal (2nd down) and turn off then turn her back on.
