Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

To get a repair manual you may find one at the link I provided here...

http://allrepairmanuals.com/appliance.php

As for taking the unit apart, try this.

You`ll need to remove the lower spray arm and then the filter below it.

1 ) Remove the turbo wash tube if applicable to your model, it pulls off, i.e.

2 ) Spray arm removal. hold the center nut and spin the arm.

3 ) Now you can remove the upper spray arm supply tub or referred to sometimes as "rear feed cap".

4 ) Now you can remove the center nut...

Then remove the four # 20 torx head screws holding the filter in place, and lift the filter out.

Below the filter you`ll find either alot of food debris, garbage, and hopefully the cherry pits etc. but also a cover with either a single #15 torx head screw or it will simply be held with a lock tab which must be pushed to one side and the cover will pull straight up and out. ( I haven`t gathered my own photo`s of this area yet, soon to come )

Now you should see the chopper and screen assembly, it too can be clogged up pretty bad, clean it best you can since you're in there anyway...you don`t really want to remove this part.

If my explanation is not clear enough, here`s a link which provides a pretty good video of how to do this, these guys aren`t pro`s but the "how to" video is pretty thorough nonetheless.

Let me know how you make out, please keep me informed if you need further assistance or anything is unclear.

Thank you for choosing FixYa and good luck.

Most KitchenAid dishwashers have an adjustable upper rack, since I do not have your model number I cannot advise on specifics but if you move the upper rack to the higher position the dispenser will open a little further.

Also if you are not washing well on the upper rack you may have either a plugged spray arm or sump.

Look at the spray arms close, if the holes are plugged then it will not spray into the dispenser properly.

If you have a tall tub KitchenAid then the sump may need cleaned.

Here are instructions that might help. But not knowing your specific model these instructions may not apply
A plugged up sump can cause a multitude of problems in a dishwasher, it can make the dishwasher not clean as well as it should, make the cycle run longer, it can create noises and redeposit food.

To clean the sump follow the directions below.

- Remove the lower rack

- Remove the lower wash arm (1) by turning the nut (4) clockwise (right) lift the arm off, there is a bearing (3) (small thin plastic washer) under the arm, be sure not to loose it. Lift the tab on the back of the feed tube cap (2) and swing it to the right and lift up, this may need a bit of pressure to release it.

- Remove the 4 screws (3) from the accumulator (1), lift off the accumulator. Remove 1 screw(7) from the cover (8) this is located down inside of the sump (4) on the left front side. Lift up and remove the cover (8), watch for glass and clean out all the debris from the sump and especially around the the area of the chopper and screen (6) which will be exposed with the cover (8) off. If the screen is blocked with debris that usually means you need a new chopper. it may be broken or loose and not doing its job.

My dishwasher makes a grinding noise when it runs. what could be causing that?

The problem most likely would be the seal for the pump has gone out and water has gotten into the motor bearings. In this case the best repair is to replace the sump assembly with the motor. The part runs about 150.00.

The other cause could be something has gotten caught in the sump that is too hard for the 'chopper' to cut up, this does not hurt anything other than to make noise, it may eventually flush down the drain, or you can disassemble the pump and clean it out. If you want to do that let me know, I will try and guide you through it.

It has a hard time getting enough water to pump up to the top. I have to start it a couple of time before it gets enough water going

I had the same problem. With other tips from this site I was able to find the solution. The cause? A cherry pit. Yes, a cherry pit broke the chopper assembly, a small food processor looking blade that chops the food before it hits the filter. With the broken blade the filter clogged quickly and didn't allow sufficient water pressure to clean the upper rack as well as the lower rack. You may have a broken chopper assembly or the filter is just clogged. Good Luck!

KitchenAid Dishwasher (model KUDS01IJBL) has black gunk inside

That black gunk is caused by soap deposits and food particles that do not get washed down the drain. This all collects in the area around the door gasket and front of the wash tub and forms a sticky black sludge. You need to periodically clean the interior of the dishwasher out with a non-abrasive cleaner with some bleach in it to kill bacteria. You should also check the wash pump sump (located under the lower spray arm) to make sure it is not being clogged with food and debris. In order to access the pump sump, you will need to perform the following:

1. Remove the lower wash rack and lower spray arm.

2. Remove the upper wash rack and spray arm.

3. Locate the screws holding in the upper spray feed tube. Remove the screws to the feed tube and turn the whole assembly 1/4 turn to the right (CW direction). The entire assembly will unlock from the wash pump assembly and lift out.

4. Remove the strainer assembly (known as an accumulator) that covers the pump sump area.

Inspect the sump area for food particles and debris that may be contributing to the mess inside the wash tub. If you need some guidance, pcappliancerepair.com has some very helpful exploded view diagrams to assist you.

If you have any questions, or require further assistance, please let me know. I hope this is helpful to you.

My Kitchenaid dishwasher failed to drain. Is there a way to fix this without calling in a repair person?

Check underneath and disconnect the drain hose that leads into the pump to see if there is something blocking it.  I had a similar problem and the technician found a cherry pit that was blocking the hose.  He told my wife that it was a common problem and showed her where to check so we could do it ourselves if it happened again.  We have not had to.

Water is not coming out of the top water jets for dishwasher

What is the model of this KitchenAid diswasher and approximatly how old is it? On some newer, energy saving models water is alternated from lower to upper spray arms. But ...
Remove filter that is in the sump area beneath the lower dish rack. Screws will need to be removed to open the area up. Look for blockages and clean filter.
Reassemble and test. If problems remain, it is probably a failing pump motor and will require a service call.

Kitchen Aid Dishwasher seems to have gotten louder over the last month

time for a cleaning.. dont worry.. its pretty easy (but gross and probably full of broken glass)..

1) switch the breaker off at the panel
2) remove the baskets and unscrew the plastic thing holding on the bottom wash arm (remove the wash arm and check it for debris)
3) remove the top washer water feeder (there should be little clips that unclip it from the inside of the dishwasher).. and then it twists clockwise and pops out
4) you'll need a med flat head or better yet a star screwdriver set for the next part
5) unscrew the screw(s) holding down the plastic cover that covers the water pump intake inside the dishwasher.. this should expose a 'trap' at the front.. BE CAREFUL
6) start cleaning that out.. there should be everything from GLASS, to olive pits to cherry pits etc etc down there.. get it all!
7) while you're in there, there is another (delicate) cleaning task with the food grater/processor inside.. there is another screw that once removed, allows you to gain access to the food grinder.. there's probably debris in here as well.
8) once you've cleaned that out, take care to line up the grater into the right channel before you reinstall everything..
9) put everything back together, and run an empty load on hot with hot dry and it should be waayy quieter.. (and you'll be surprised at how clean the glassware is).

good luck

Motor sounds like it is straining '

When you get a chance, please post the whole model number of your Maytag dishwasher here.
Because you are still getting clean dishes, you probably have debris (a bone or fruit pit) that has gotten down to the pump/impeller or the chopper area.
Remove the lower spray arm, remove the filter/sump assembly and clean everything out. With a flash light, inspect the whole sump area for debris. I bet you will find stuff there (beware of broken glass!) and when you re-assemble, the noise will ne normal.
Good Luck! Please post back what you find, OK?

I have a LG dishwasher model # LDS5811WW is there a filter of some sort at the water intake? My water has be known to have sand in it . The dishes are not all washing some are some aren't.

No filter in these units. It is possible that sand has gotten into the sump assembly and is not allowing the vario motor to properly switch between the upper and lower spray nozzles.
