Question about GE Refrigerators

Open Question

I have a GE Refrig Mod # GSS25JFMD. I changed the board and the heater and did as much research and trouble shooting before I replaced these parts. The heater and the board were not working, and the heater was open. What concerns me is in the instructions for the board replacement, it states to Open the lead in the harness by cutting the wire @ P-2 . This would eliminate the function of the thermistor and determine defrost strictly on the T-stat. The T-stat is rated @ 140. Wouldn't that be a Tad High for the defrost system to terminate at. I don't do this everyday, so maybe I'm missing something?

just check continuity thro the heater but these heaters are reliable.there should also be a thermal cut-out in series with the heater and check this as well.

SOURCE: GE GSS22SGMC BS s x s freezer frost build up

Jake, the green wire is the ground, just attach it to one of the screws the secure the cover plate. As far as you ordering both the heater and the board, you have it covered. Catriver.

SOURCE: GE frige no defrost

I just fixed the same problem. Here is the solution. It is 2 parts:

First, the doors on these models are defective. They are not insulated so cool air escapes, causing freezer to keep running thus burning out defrost element.

Replace defrost element. Then, drill holes, on the inside of each door, starting at the top and then every 1 foot down, in the center of the door. Buy 2 cans of the spray insulating foarm from your local home depot. Fill inside of door to insulate them. Wipe away any over fill.

This will make it like new again. GE really botch this one up. There was a class action suit for new doors 2 years ago. I missed it and so did your customer.

SOURCE: how do you replace the defrost heater in a ge frig

I have a GSH 22JSTC SS that has a frosting problem. After a series of hairdrier sessions and conversations with the know-nothings at GE service help, I took out the defrost heater and noticed it had burned out. I bought another one and after a few days, that too burned out. (all black like a bad light bulb). What is my next step? Testing the Thermostat? Could this be a timer issue? Where is the timer located? Any imput is greatly appreciated. I am one frustrated GE owner. Thanks

You will have to cut the wire if the first three letters of your serial number matches one on the list on the instructions since your is an encoder model.   http://appliance-repair-it.com/GE-refrigerator-repair.html

GE SIDE BY SIDE MODEL #GSH22JFRE CC FREEZER COIL FREEZING AND REFRIG NOT COOLING. DEFROST MANUALLY AND REFRIG COOLS FOR A COUPLE DAYS, THEN FREEZER COILS FREEZE AGAIN

We have a GE side by side that was only 4 years old before it starting giving us problems-coiling freezing over. The warranty period was only one year on all parts, including the compressor. Through our research we learned that profile appliances have or did have a better warranty. I believe it is 5 years on all or certain components. Either way it may be worth contacting GE customer service to help you with the issue and determine if repairs and parts for your appliance are still covered under warranty. They were very helpful in our case and ultimately discounted the parts I ordered and replaced myself. Replaced the the temperature sensors on the freezer side, the defroster thermostat and defroster heater before finally breaking down and replacing the control board. The control board was the problem. It was very easy to replace. While working through the issue, we would defrost the coils located on the inside of the freezer side with a hair dryer. It would get us by until the parts came in or they frosted over again and prevented air from circulating over them, thus causing the freezer not to cool. Good luck. Hope this helps you.

The freezer side of my GE GSS25PGMF is not working, but the refrigerator side is fine. Is there an easy/inexpensive fix?

Pull the refrig out and remove the 8 " x 10 " panel . Behind this panel , is the main control board ( you already know , since you changed it ) . Unplug the refrig . Remove the BLUE plug from the board , with 3 larger wires going to it . Looking at the blue plug , the sequence will be wire1,wire2,space,wire3 . Get a short piece of insulated wire , and strip about 1/4 inch from each end . Insert 1 end into wire2 , and the other into wire3 . Plug the refrig back in . After about 3 min , look in the freezer , at the bottom , behind the crisper , look for a red glow . If no red glow , unplug the refrig , and reassemble the plug and cover . This no glow , indicates a shorted defrost heater WR51X10055 . It is also advisable to replace the defrost thermostat ( pt. number WR50X10068 ) when replacing the heater . To access these parts , you will have to remove the inside rear wall of the freezer . The heater , is at the bottom of the coils , held on with 2 screws , and the thermostat , is the 1 " cylinder , with a blue and pink wire going to it , clipped on the top left of the coils .
If you do get a red glow , then the # 4 thermistor is bad . This tells the main control board , the temp of the coils , if they need defrosted , when they are thru defrosting . This thermistor is the 1 " long , torpedo looking piece , clipped on the top left of the coils , with 2 white wires going to it . Part number WR55X10025 . It would be advisable to also replace the # 5 thermistor , located at the bottom of the freezer , slightly in front of the drain , also with 2 white wires going to it , slid into a housing . This thermistor , is the freezer thermistor , which tells the control board , the freezer temp , when to cycle off , associated with the fan speed also .

Refrig. is about 4-5 years old and regrig side stop getting cold then the freezer followed suit-not getting cold. what should i do

Look inside the freezer on the back wall. If there is ice on the back wall the defrost heater and defrost thermostat are the usual suspects. They are both in the freezer behind the back panel.
Look for a deformed defrost thermostat. The glass heater will look burned. Both can be checked with a meter set for continuity. No continuity equals a bad part. Remove the wires from the parts before checking or a false reading will occur.
