Question about NetGear DG834G Router
Posted by Anonymous on
There's a couple of easy ways.. one is to give it a name and password to access it. Everyone would see it but can't log into it when it asks them for that info.
Another way is to enable your MAC filter. You can filter out specific MAC addresses, or, you can only allow specific MAC addresses to access the router (that's how I do it at my house). Everyone can still "see" the router, but can't access it.
Turn on the security. e.g. WPA. You'll have a "key" either entered by you, or generated for you.
All these are in the configuration. You just enter in the IP address for the router and log in. It's in the instructions that came with the device, or it'll be on their website as well. it'll be something like
basic logins are such as: admin... sysadmin... netgear.. operator...
and the passwords are similar... admin.. sysadmin.. system... password...
again, all that should be in your basic instructions, or on the NetGear site as well for what they are by default. Even if you didn't secure your router, you'd want to change the login ID and password, or at least the password so no one else could log into and lock YOU out.
(if that happened though, you can physically reset to factory defaults by a small reset button generally on the back of the device).

You may need to install the program on one computer if you haven't. After that all you have to do is put in your search bar 192.168.1.1. Then you can look on the left of the pop up window and select either password settings for the router to access the settings and to access the modem. Usually sign in is admin and the password is password. Then you can reset both....but write them down.
