Question about Jenn-Air JDR8895AAS Dual Fuel (Electric and Gas) Kitchen Range

Both ovens overheat regardless of temperature setting, e.g., I set a roast temp of 325 on the panel and placed two known-good oven thermometers in the oven. On multiple tests, both ovens indicated over 500 degrees on both themometers before I shut the ovens off. I don't know how high they might have gone if I hadn't shut them off.

Hello & Welcome to FixYa

Overheating is caused due to open/shorted oven temperature sensor and to solve this problem the sensor needs replacement. If you wan to be sure before replacing the sensor then you can test it with a voltmeter for around 1100ohms....if it reads more then this then it needs replacement however, if the reading is around or less then 1100ohms then it is the control board that needs replacement. A lot depends on the oven itself, whether it is fan forced, how well it holds heat etc.

Preheat to 240°C/475°F/ gas 9, place the meat in, and turn down to 200°C/400°F/gas 6. Cook it for about 1 hour, then take it out and place it covered on the serving dish for 15 min. before carving. This first go may need to have slightly modified times for the next roast you cook.

To get a perfect result you really need a meat thermometer

You don't need to put this in the oven with the meat, just insert the tip to the middle of the roast when it gets near time to see what is happening

What are you using to measure the temperature of the oven? If you using a typical round oven thermometer, the reason is that your thermometer response is slow. It takes about 20 minutes for those thermometers to reach and display the actual temperature, and your oven is probably reaching it's set temperature in about 10 minutes. You really need an electronic thermometer or at least one of those liquid thermometers which you can sometimes find at Ace Hardware or True Value Hardware stores.

The first thing to ask yourself is "Is the thermostat accurate?"
Get an El-Cheap-O oven thermometer at the grocery store. Set your oven for any random temp, say 325. With the over thermometer HANGING FROM A RACK IN THE MIDDLE, wait until the oven light that tells you it is heating goes out, indicating that the oven is at 325. Open the door and QUICKLY read the thermometer you have hanging in there. IF the hanging thermometer and the temp displayed on the oven match within, say, 25 degrees then we have an issue. And, as you say that you have already replaced the temperature sensing element, that only leaves the control board or the upper and lower safety thermostats. Those are what we call "Snap Disc" thermostats. To see a typical snap disc thermostat, go to ApppliancePartsPros.Com or just BING (NEVER 'Google') Part Number: AP3055315. These theremostats may be opening prematurely, preventing the oven from reaching full temp. And once the oven cools, the snap disc will close again, allowing the unit to work. Kind Of. If it's not one of the safeties, the board is toast.

Well, your temp sensors can still be bad. If not, there's always a new control board you buy!

However, I wouldn't drink water from that oasis without making ABSOLUTELY sure I'm not seeing a mirage.

The only common denominators between your upper and lower oven temp readings is the firmware and the oven thermometer you are using to visually check the temps.
What type of thermometer are you using to check your oven temperatures with?
If it's not a digital thermometer used specifically for testing ovens, you might just be leading leading yourself astray.
You need a calibrated thermometer. If I don't have a calibrated digital thermometer on me, I use two or three oven thermometers (the dial type) and average the readings.
It's the only way to be as close as possible with a digital probe.

If you have thoroughly verified that your oven is in fact not reading the correct temperature, then you can adjust it +/- 35 degrees F via your oven's control panel.
To adjust the oven temperature:
1 - Press Setup pad.
2 - Select the down arrow to scroll to the next screen.
3 - Select Temp Adjust using the Quickset pads.
4 - Select upper or lower oven (select models).
-"Set temperature offset using the Upper Set Knob" is displayed.
5 - Enter the desired temperature change using the Set knob.
The temperature can be increased or decreased up to 35 degrees.
The temp. change is displayed at the top of the window.
6 - Press the Set knob to accept the change.

Now, if you are still worried about the temp. reading being off, replace both the upper and lower temp sensors. That's all you can do besides replace the main board.

The oven does not heat to the set temperature. It is usually much hotter


You can have the oven recalibrated by a professional OR you can purchase an oven thermometer and check the temperature yourself. Place the oven thermometer in the oven.Set the oven to a specific temperature. When it indicates it is at that temperature check the thermometer. Adjust your setting by that many degrees. For instance, if you set the temp at 350 and the oven thermometer shows 450, then reduce your temperature setting by 100 degrees each time you use the oven.

Oven temperature has been factory calibrated and tested. If
oven consistently over or under cooks food, adjust thermostat.
Oven temperature can be increased or decreased 35°F. To
avoid over adjusting oven, move temperature 5°F each time.
1. Push BAKE pad.
2. Press + pad until an oven temperature greater than 500°F
shows in display.
3. Immediately push and hold, approximately 5 seconds,
BAKE button until “00” appears.
4. Press + or - arrow pad to adjust oven temperature.
• To increase oven temperature (for a hotter oven), Press
pad until a positive number appears in display.
• To decrease oven temperature (for a cooler oven),
Press pad until a negative number appears in display.
5. Press OVEN CANCEL pad to save adjustment.
• Setting is saved if power fails or is disconnected.
