If the drive is making noise, that means the drive is physically malfunctioning. It is possible that your laptop is causing a short in the units. However if you use usb ports often with no other issues, then it is probably just the drives being defective.

Hook it up to my laptop

There should be a port located at the back of the printer where you can run one end from the back of the printer to the USB port on your laptop. Once connected your laptop should recognize it as a new device and give you instructions from there. Hope this helps good luck!

Hook an external keyboard to the laptop, if okay! replace the laptop keyboard, if no change! there is a device drive issue, do a system restore of your computer back to an earlier time before this happened.

Had this problem myself one time, you can hook up a dvd drive externally via one of the USB ports. to make a dvd drive external, you need an external enclosure for one or just purchase an external dvd drive.

Tweak BIOS to install Windows XP

Shouldn't need any "tweaking". Not sure offhand on the c700, but manytimes the Compaq bios is limited (and I'm a Compaq user - servers, desktops & laptops). What is itexactly that you're trying to achieve? I replaced Vista on my F500 series first with XP and finally with Linux - no problems (other than initially finding drivers). Just make sure to download and build an XP driver disk beforehand and you won't have any problems.

What i've done in the past is to hook up the hard drive from your laptop to a normal desktop computer. You will need the right hookups to hook the power and the cable from the laptop hard drive to your desktop computer.

Once you hook up your hard drive to the desktop computer then you can try and do a copy and paste of the items you want from the laptop hard drive to the desktop hard drive and then burn the files to a blank dvd or cd. If you can't do this then the hard drive is beyond damaged and you won't be able to recover any data.

Compaq Presario V2000 won't turn on

Ah yes, another illustration of the value of backing up often.
You didn't mention the name of the drive maker but you might get some response to an email asking if they make an adaptor that would allow you to access it via a cable if installed in another system.
I have made dozens of adaptors to resolve this knid of bottleneck. Uuuh, that wasn't an offer to make one, I'm retired and age has stolen too much of my steadiness for soldering and eyesight to see what I am doing.

Toshiba Satallite 1415 wont boot

Sounds like maybe the hard drive is not hooked up or not hooked correctly. Tey unhooking it and re hooking it back up.
If it worked before but not now it has to be somethign is not hooked ack up correctly and a cd will not help.
If Its not the hard drive I would suggest taking it back apart to the point you had it before and reasembling it again but make sure all connections are tight, especially the ones where you slide the flat wire in and then lock it.
It has to be a loos connection some where.
that or the timing of the failure is just coincedental with the disasembly and one has nothing to do with the other.  If thats the case then you have a different problem.
If it is just a fluke and you just have failure I would suggest downloading a program you can install to cd like windows live and then boot to the cd.  once booted to cd you can access the hard drive and fix any problems with directory structure.
