Hi there,

I did a bit of research for you and came across an article which says this:

It's difficult when you forget a password, especially if the data on the password protected hard drive is of value. Unfortunately, I'm not sure there is much you can do. Try some of these steps to see if they can help you unlock your external device.

The only real solution or hope that you have is looking for a reset button on the external device. The reset button is on the back of the device and is most likely located where the power supply or USB connection hooks into.

If you do have one of these buttons, power off the device and unplug the device from all the power cords or connections running into the box and hold the reset button for at least 30 seconds. You may need to use a paper clip or another similar tool to press the button.

If this works, it should reset the device to the default user name and password which is usually blank.

If that doesn't work, the best thing I can suggest is taking it to a service technician.

I bought a wd external hard drive last year and inserted it with a password. now 8 months later i have forgotten the password and not many contents are inside. it is practically empty . i want to use it...

Unfortunately without the password there is no way to recover the contents of the drive. To make the drive usable again, you can reformat it (and lose all the current contents):
  • On a Windows computer, right-click the drive and select Format drive. Pick NTFS as the filetype.
  • On a Mac, go to disk utilities and select the drive you want to format. Click on the Erase tab, and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the Volume Format Type. Name the hard drive and hit the erase button.

Forgotten seagate freeagent pro encryption password

Hi dollarbilll,

You can ask for your password hint to help you remember your password, as long as you
originally created a password hint.
If you still can't remember your password, the only way to regain access to your Seagate
Secure drive is to KeyErase it. This will erase ALL of your files and allow you to reset your
password.
Once you KeyErase your Seagate Secure drive, there is no way to recover your files (even by
using a data recovery service). Only do this as a last resort!

The one other thing you may try is to copy the folder if you can get to it, someplace else on another drive and go to properties and see if you can change the ownership of the folder and gain access.

Otherwise, keep trying to remember.

Everything is possible. Few points. Is this external hd? Did you used the software and the drivers given by the manufacturer? Which OS are you using?
Yes it is possible to erase everything on any type of the drive and start from scratch. You can do this by formatting the drive make sure you do NTFS format.
Let me know please!
