SOURCE: i need to know how

Hi ajhazel1,

Please follow the steps below on how to set the alarm on your seth thomas mantel pendulum clock.

1. Determine if your Seth Thomas mantel clock is a 7-day clock or an 8-day clock. On most models it will say right on the face of the clock which type it is. Seven-day clocks must be wound every 7 days, and 8-day clocks must be wound every 8 days. If you are unsure you should wind your clock every seven days.

2. Look on the back of the clock. You will see three large holes (just large enough for the clock winding key to fit into) plus one or two smaller holes (often just large enough for the small end of the key to fit into). The two smaller holes are for speeding up or slowing down the clock and for turning the chimes off and on. The three larger holes are the ones we are interested in--they are the ones we will need to wind every 7 or 8 days. On some models the three winding holes are on the front of the clock. Winding instructions are the same, regardless of where the winding holes are located.

3. Push the large end of your clock winding key gently into the hole on the right as you look at the back of the clock. This hole allows you to wind the 15-minute chimes. Gently turn the key clockwise. Keep turning it until you feel resistance and the key stops turning. Remove the key.

4. Insert the large end of your key gently into the center hole. This hole allow you to wind the main clock mechanism, which allows the clock to run and to keep time. Turn the key clockwise firmly but gently until you feel resistance. When the key no longer wants to turn simply remove it.

5. Insert the large end of the key into the hole on the left. This winds the hour chimes. Turn the key clockwise firmly but gently until you meet with resistance. When the key no longer turns easily remove it and place your clock back on your mantel. Your clock is now set to run for 7 or 8 days, depending on the model you own.

6. Use your hand to start the pendulum swinging once the Seth Thomas mantel clock has been set to the right time. The pendulum should be located in the back of the clock. The clock will not keep time if the pendulum is not moving.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Why is there two places to wind a Seth Thomas Corsair E537-000 clock? Any description on the proper tension for winding?

Two winding arbours are in clocks with chiming, because there are two separategears in one clock and each one is driven by separate mainspring. Description for winding is: Wind each spring as long as you do not feel significant resistance. As soon as you feel the winding goes too hard - stop winding.

How do i wind an old seth thomas pocket watch? mfg. 1894, montgomery ward model

mcdevito75 here, I believe you"ll need a special winding key to wind your Seth Thomas Clock, Best Bet, look for a small watch repair shop in your area, they may be able to order a key for you, have all info regarding the clock with you. Winding keys may also be on ebay under Vintage Clocks/watches.

Setting the correct time on Seth Thomas clock.

Correct technique definitely is CLOCKWISE ONLY. You are unbelievably lucky person if did not damage striking mechanism within 25 years while adjusting hands anti clockwise. If I'd have such a luck, I'd try to play lottery. :))

The pendulum stopped swinging...the clock and chimes work well

Hi
This clock short of needing a full service may simply be out of beat.

Taken from my web page located at:
http://antiqueclock.clockstop.com/CLOCK_BEAT.htm

"HOW TO PUT YOUR CLOCK IN BEAT"
-Included below is a 10-second sound <snip> of a clock both in and out of beat.

leval.jpg notleval.jpg
IN BEAT ////////\\\\ OUT OF BEAT
· Turn on your sound and click on the clocks above for a sound clip.

-One little known fact is that a clock does not have to be level to be in beat. I had a customer that had a mantel clock in an old farm house, it was brought in for repairs and sent back running great just one problem: I put the clock in beat on a level surface [a small problem] because the mantel it had set on for it's entire life was not level. I had to literally go to the house to put it in beat where it sat.
-I have often found most Grandfather or floor clocks are set up out of level and put in beat where they stand, This is fine.
-As I'm sure we now realize a clock must be in beat but not always level to function properly.
clutch.jpg
· Above is the verge with a slip clutch.
· Often found on Grandfather clocks and requires only a long swing to get it in beat.

-To get the clock on the right side in beat you would need to push the verge assembly to the left.
-If it must be bent to put it in beat, do it slightly, but don't bend any of the suspension parts.
