1) Download and install a programme called Ccleaner from

a) Run the cleaner, gets all the temporary files and web related rubbish off your pc you didn't know you had.
b) Select the "Tools" option from the left hand side of the Ccleaner window, click on startup, and delete al the startup items listed except for anti-virus software and firewalls. This means that you will have to actually start a programme you need from a short cut or programmes instead of running them all, all of the time.

2) Give it a defrag.

3) Disconnect the tower, take off the outer case and, with a real bristle paint brush and hoover, carefully remove all the dust and fluff from inside. (If the CPU gets hot it starts to step down in performance speed) Clearing all the vents and the heat dispersal vents over the CPU and CPU fans, helps to avoid this.

4) If you wish to speed up further, its a case of adding more RAM, to do that, first go to the "Crucial" or "Orca" web site, enter the details of your pc and it will tell you how much you can put in your pc and what type, bear in mind if you're running XP, the most it can support is 3 GB of ram. You don't have to buy it from them, but the info is very useful.

Computer CPU/Processor maxed 100%

Is your computer experiencing a CPU that is running at 100% Is your computer experiencing slow performance?

You can view your CPU utilization and other performance stats using Windows Task Manager. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and bring up Task Manager. Go to the performance tab.

The top of this screen should show your CPU stats.

In Linux you can use the TOP command,
Type the top command:
$ top

A CPU that is running at 100% utilization is not necessarily a problem. When the computer is booting up, or coming out of sleep mode, it may max out the CPU which is normal. The CPU will be utilized fully in order to bring the computer up as fast as possible. Some computers will even utilize the CPU while it is idle, to complete background task such as disk cleanup and file reallocation.

A problem will occur if the CPU stays maxed out. If it stays at 100% for more than a couple of minutes, you may be experiencing degraded computer performance.

Steps to reduce performance degradation.

-In a limited number of cases, software bugs can cause CPU utilization to spike. You will know this is the case if you are using a computer program(that is not hardware intensive like photo/video editors) and notice degraded computer performance. Check your CPU stats while running the program. If this is the case, check online for solutions and possible upgrades which resolve bugs in the software.

-You can reduce Windows start up programs, which will speed up the boot/wakeup process. You can do this from the MSCONFIG window. Go to Start > and in the run box type "msconfig". Go to the "startup" tab and you can uncheck which programs you do not want to start with Windows.

-A majority of the time a computer will get to a point were the hardware will need to be upgraded in order to handle the work you are doing. Common computer upgrades are memory, cpu, motherboard and hard drive.

Our emachines el1200-06w runs very slow after sitting idle for any length of time - when we start it up, it runs OK, but later it almost stops - takes very long time to process. we run defender pro 2011...

You need to upgrade your memory to the maximum allowed by your motherboard which in your model is expandle to 4gb of ram max. You should be fine with the cpu that you have, just don't be running high gaming, digital editing, programs. You shouldn't multi task that much either too, because your cpu isn't meant to handle that much of a thread. But adding memory will solve the slow unresponsive promblem you are dealing with. Your computer should accept ddr2 memories. Remember don't go over 4gb, otherwise your computer won't function correctly.

Emachine 3240 possible power problem?

I would suggest try to swap the power supply out with another known good power supply.

I've seen where even though the light on the motherboard is lit, it is not getting enough power to start the machine up, especially if you have a higher end video card connected to it.

Max is 256M Memory. You're much better off getting a new system. A new motherboard, processor and ram isn't that much...
